How We Use Ozone To Treat Smoke Damage In Jamestown
Deodorization is a fundamental step for nearly every fire loss recovery that our professionals address throughout Jamestown. Whether it is a massive structure fire that can compromise a building’s integrity to kitchen flare-ups that do not spread their effects beyond this immediate dining area, smoke odors are the universal effects professional restorers must combat. Our team has multiple strategies for removing odors, and one of the most powerful tools in our arsenal for on-site and off-site deodorization is ozone machines and chambers.
Ozone is an active deodorization agent, and it can help our team to manage fire damage in Jamestown homes quickly. As much as these conditions can spread throughout a residence, a prompt deployment of this deodorization equipment can reduce the permeation of materials and these effects reaching unaffected areas of the house. Ozone generators do not get used without risk and warnings, however. Their efficiency in a home comes at the cost of health risks and hazards to people and pets exposed to the chemical reactions. Our SERVPRO team has the appropriate personal protective equipment to safely utilize this equipment and to safely shut it down to continue other restoration efforts.
We strive to recover contents and areas of your home at minimal impact to your life. When we can restore items at your house, for instance, we do. This approach not only saves us time and effort of moving it to our facility, but it reduces the time in returning these items to their original positions. These smaller units that arrive with the Green Fleet produce ozone which bonds with odor molecules by generating an additional oxygen molecule in the atmosphere.
Our SERVPRO Facility
This same technology fuels the ozone chamber at our facility nearby. When items must get packed-out from a fire-damaged home, they get taken to our warehouse for cleaning and deodorization. We can group many items, including furniture and other contents to deodorize entire lots. Our ozone room can provide a controlled environment to undertake widespread odor removal tactics.
Our team needs to provide our customers with expectation-exceeding service. When you are already vacating your home for restoration, we can deploy our efficient and powerful ozone machines that can provide real-time deodorization for fire-damaged areas of the property. Give our SERVPRO of Jamestown / Olean team a call today at (716) 338-4901.

We Discuss Remediation Steps Needed To Clean Up Flood Damage In Your Jamestown Store
We are here, 24/7, year-round, including weekends and all holidays.
Remediation Steps Needed To Clean Up Commercial Flood Damage In A Jamestown Area Retail Store
Intense storms during the fall can cause a deluge of rain and flooding to overtake retail stores and shops in Jamestown. We consider the water that comes inside to be Category 3, which is the worst level of contamination possible. Specific remediation steps must take place for your store to re-open after this kind of disaster.
One of the initial steps we take when remediating a retail setting in Jamestown of storm or flood damage involves putting safety precautions into place. Employees of SERVPRO and those of our customers have a right to safe working conditions. During Category 3 remediation, wear personal protective equipment (PPE) that makes the interior setting less hazardous. Other safety precautions involving electrical wiring, gas lines, and debris are crucial to our safety.
Decreasing the ability of cross-contamination from happening is another vital aspect of protecting SERVPRO specialists as they perform remediation services. We address the issue of contamination with both disinfection methods and containment chambers. The first makes picking up and transferring contaminants from surfaces less likely to happen. Chambers use negative air pressure to help contain any dislodged contaminants, as these can rest deeper inside materials.
Cleaning up and carrying out the restoration process starts with removing remaining water. When pumping water out of basements, we do so in stages. This allows us to check for changes to your foundation that might occur if the ground outside is overly saturated and places too much pressure on the foundation's walls.
We actively work on reducing the humidity in the air, as this is a crucial part of drying the structure. As long as water vapor stays above normal levels, the structure can develop problems with secondary water damage. As long as contaminants remain in the area, we need to combine dehumidification efforts and negative pressure containment. However, until the level of contaminants dips down to normal, we refrain from using air movers because we want to avoid transferring any microbes from one area to another.
We also bag up debris from both the flood and also any damaged materials. This can require cutting and pulling sections of materials away from walls. We also collect furnishings and any salvageable inventory for cleaning and restoration at our facility. In some buildings, enclosed spaces can keep floodwater trapped. Our building services crew works with us in opening these areas up in a manner that makes rebuilding them possible.
Just before finishing, we clean the area with a disinfectant and remove any bagged waste for disposal. We decontaminate our PPE and equipment. Then we do a final check to ensure we have not missed anything.

Commercial Flood Damage Olean – CloudBurst Floods Office
Don’t let flood damage stop your day at the office in Olean, let us help.
SERVPRO will have you back to work in your Olean office in no time.
Recently a localized storm blew through the area and flooded one of our client's offices. He mentioned that it felt like a cloud burst with so much water falling. In situations such as this, storm sewers cannot possibly deal with all of the water, and it floods local businesses. When he got to work the morning of the storm, the main floor had several inches of water covering the office floors, and all of the electrical connections had shorted out.
The client quickly called SERVPRO for help with his commercial office and the flood damage in Olean. The water receded quickly from the parking lot. However, there was still a great deal of water in the office. Many of his computers sitting on the floor were also damaged. We responded within the hour and after assessing the situation to make sure it was safe to enter, began removing equipment and desks to facilitate the water removal and drying process.
The carpet and underpad were placed directly on a cement pad. Potentially contaminated water flooded the carpet and underpad from the parking lot and storm sewers. We removed the carpet and underpad. The sheetrock on the walls absorbed moisture up to approximately fifteen inches from the floor. The sheetrock was cut away up to twenty-four inches to remove all potentially moisture-damaged material. The cement floor and walls were decontaminated and dried in preparation for new underpad and carpeting
SERVPRO also uses air movers to force air into challenging to get to areas. The high-speed air currents generated by the air movers pick up the remaining moisture drying the floor and walls quickly. The computers and other electronic equipment were referred to a third party by the client for repair.
New carpeting and underpad were installed along with repairs to the sheetrock on the walls. All of the desks, chairs and associated furniture were hand washed and dried. SERVPRO technicians returned the furniture to their designated spots.

What is the Best Way to Restore Flood Damaged Property in Olean?
Our tecnhicians are always on standby to take your call.
Commercial Flood Damage Restoration For Olean Businesses
With its location on I-86, Olean is a great layover spot for tourism and transportation. Area businesses support families on extended vacations to the nearby Allegany Forest and Lake Erie or truck drivers on an overnight stop.
While the swelling lake doesn’t reach this far, extreme thunderstorms can still cause commercial flood damage in Olean motels. To repair or replace damaged property, SERVPRO response teams train to quickly remove water, dispose of non-restorable items, dry the structure, and restore property not severely damaged.
Teams start by spraying the floodwater and nearby surfaces with an anti-bacterial agent to neutralize any contaminants. Then, they use pumps or smaller extraction devices to remove the water. Since the water contains solid particulates, WRTs (Water Damage Restoration Technicians) send the water directly into the nearest sewer access point.
Water softens the glue as it soaks the carpets in the rooms and office areas. While this is a problem to solve if the water was clean, contaminated water means that SERVPRO cannot guarantee the safety of the carpet. Here, the softened glue makes it easier and faster to remove the carpets for disposal. After finishing with the carpets, the WRTs scrape the glue off the bare floors and clean them again with an anti-bacterial detergent.
Simultaneously, other technicians remove all furniture from the flooded rooms and raise it off the ground. They then clean and examine the furniture for damage, either on-site or at our facility. If wood items have a finish or veneer, WRTs set up a combination of air movers and fans to carefully dry and harden them again. If needed, team members also set up a dehumidifier to draw moisture out of the items to speed up the process.
With the furniture out, other team members examine the drywall panels. If they have absorbed enough water to being crumbling, then the team remove and dispose of them immediately. For panels that only absorbed a small amount of water, WRTs use more air movers and fans to dry them in place carefully.
For SERVPRO of Jamestown / Olean, supporting our area businesses means supporting the entire community. We are here for every commercial facility locally and in Falconer, Frewsburg, and Lakewood. If your business has had a flood or other water intrusion, call (716) 338-4901 today to begin restoration. We are here to help you.

Fire Damage Restoration For Olean Homes
Olean is in a great location to enjoy water sports on Lake Erie, but far enough away to miss much of the extreme weather that rolls off of it in the Fall and Winter. No home here, or anywhere in our state, is safe from a fire just because of where it rests.
Most Olean fire damage does not mean the end of the home. Much of what SERVPRO technicians take care of is removing smoke residues, cleaning floors and carpets, and making repairs like replacing drywall and ceiling tiles.
There are several dos and don’ts that any owner can take care of themselves. Getting these things done or avoiding them can help our restoration teams before they even arrive to begin work. First, the Dos:
- Have the name of your insurance company, phone number, and policy number ready. Every company has its list of what they repair or replace. Talking to their adjuster lets our technicians quickly record and dispose of everything not restorable.
- Turn off the power if any of the outlets were compromised. You can do this at the breaker box or have your power company do it at their end. It allows our team members to look everywhere and tear out walls, floors, and ceilings without the concern of being electrocuted.
Now the Don’ts:
- Don’t walk through the house multiple times. Every step grinds ash and smoke residues into the carpets and floors, so staying off them makes restoration easier. If you want to look at a room often, go through the home once with your phone or a video camera. Better yet, let the insurance adjuster do that since she already knows to record everything for the company and how to avoid further damage.
- Don’t demolish anything yourself. Tearing out a burned kitchen cabinet or throw out other damaged property is a normal reaction, but you need to avoid doing it since it might void something off the insurance company’s list. SERVPRO technicians train extensively to break down and remove items from home without spreading ash and smoke residues or causing other damage.
At SERVPRO of Jamestown / Olean, our goal is to help our neighbors here and in Lakewood, Falconer, Frewsburg return to a clean, safe home ready for living in once more. No matter how little or how much damage you think you might have in your home, call us at (716) 338-4901 today. We are here to help.

Restoring Fire Damaged Property In Lakewood Homes
Quick access to the Southern Tier Expressway makes Lakewood a great location for travel, tourism, and raising a family. The drawbacks are the same as anywhere else, though when it comes to disasters like storms, floods, and fires.
For many homeowners in Lakewood, fire damage restoration is more about the loss of personal property, rather than the home itself. Insurance can replace four walls and a roof, even a bedroom set, but it cannot replace a dining room set handed down through three generations. It is one reason that SERVPRO trains its response team members as Fire & Smoke Damage Restoration Technicians or FSRTs. Each learns six specific methods to clean and restore not only property but memories.
Dry Cleaning is the first and most common used method. FSRTs have the option to brush off or wipe down surfaces covered with soot left by the fire. Here, they use dry sponges, dusting cloths, and even feather dusters on surfaces like glass tables. For thicker layers of dry soot, they also have the option of using vacuums that also pick up larger particles.
Wet Cleaning involves wiping down surfaces with cloths or sponges, and either water or a cleaning agent to break up thicker, and stickier layers of soot. This method saturates any item that absorbs liquids.
FSRTs use the Spray and Wipe method for applying water or a cleaning agent to materials that become damaged with too much liquid. They can apply smaller amounts that can still break up soot layers. In most cases, SERVPRO technicians use this method with a white cloth.
The Foam Cleaning method uses less water for fabrics that might shrink or bleed color if they become too wet. Upholstered furniture, in particular, is at risk for both. FSRTs can use a pump-up sprayer or agitate foam from a bucket of cleaner by hand. To work the particles out of sofas or mattresses, they use a special brush designed for the purpose.
Abrasive Cleaning has two methods: an abrasive cleaner technicians work into a surface to break up layers, or an abrasive tool, steel wool pads, for example, to dig into the surface. FSRTs restrict using this method to surfaces like brick or rock.
Immersion Cleaning is exactly that. Technicians place the item into a tank of cleaning agent to soak and loosen the soot or other contaminants from the item. For heavily covered items, FSRTs also have the option to use ultrasonics to generate bubbles that force the agent through the item.
At SERVPRO of Jamestown / Olean, we use every method to return the contents of area homes and those in Falconer, Frewsburg, and Randolph to a clean, dry state. If you need us, call today at (716) 338-4901.

We respond to water cleanup as soon as possible to prevent further damage. We have the necessary equipment, expertise and experience.
Five Things to Consider About the Restorability of Upholstered Furniture from Water Damage in Jamestown
Water damage of any source wrecks havoc on a home. Sheetrock warps and buckles, tiles may delaminate from flooring and a host of other problems. One aspect that surprises many property owners is that upholstered furniture is not automatically a loss when exposed to copious amounts of water because of our restoration techniques.
When SERVPRO answers a call restore a home in Jamestown from water damage, we focus on the effort of restoring rather than the homeowner dealing with the burden and cost of replacing items affected by water, and some considerations determine whether or not upholstered furnishings require replacing.
Type of Furniture
The materials used to construct the furniture have a significant impact on restorability potential. Solid wood furniture fares better than composite wood furnishings which are generally a loss due to warping and one side retaining water while the laminated side creates a water vapor barrier.
The time between the water spill and cleanup should be as short as possible to limit the potential for warping and cracking. The frame of most upholstered furniture is wood and can swell when wet. Fast drying encourages a positive outcome for restoration.
Dry clean only fabrics tend to spot easily and sometimes require our SERVPRO technicians rewet entire cushions or fabric areas and dry as a whole to eliminate spotting.
Staining and Color Bleeding
Some materials have dyes that run when dampened and furnishings with stained legs can ruin carpeting when the stain leeches into the wet carpet. SERVPRO technicians have several proprietary techniques to avoid this scenario.
Removal of odors can be determinate on how quickly the furniture dries, and our technicians have methods and specialized equipment to eradicate foul scents left behind by water damage.
SERVPRO of Jamestown / Olean has the equipment and experience to save many home furnishings from water damage. Contact us 24/7 at (716) 338-4901 and let us make the damage to your property and contents "Like it never even happened."

Our Trained Technicians Have The Necessary Equipment To Restore Your Lake Erie Home Of Flood Damage
Our team has the resources to handle any type of storm damage. Whether it is water damage from rain or a fire from lighting, we are here to help!
SERVPRO - Remediating Flood Damage To Homes In Olean
There are few communities in the western half of our state better situated than Olean for water sports. Residents can have breakfast in their own home, spend an incredible day on the water, fishing, boating, water skiing, and more, then drive home just far enough away to avoid the tourist traffic and other issues.
Olean is still close enough though to deal with the flood damage in Lake Erie that can happen after a storm rolls in off the lake. When it does happen, SERVPRO is ready. Each response team is highly trained and has access to both an extensive on-hand inventory of equipment and a nationwide network of equipment and personnel when the worst possible outcome turns into an event.
The team’s first step is to get the water out of the home. Since this is outside water, there is a risk from the soil, overflowing sewer systems, and more contaminants. Team members spray the water and nearby surfaces with an anti-bacterial agent to reduce the threat and then remove it using a commercial grade pump. They pump it back into the sewer if a drain is available. If not, it goes into a tank truck for delivery to a water treatment plant.
Next, SERVPRO teams dry the floors, walls, and any property that was under the water. To increase the natural evaporation process, they install exhaust fans to draw the damp air from inside the home to the outside and dehumidifiers to draw water directly from the air and nearby surfaces.
To directly dry property, technicians install air movers. They can direct these devices in any direction, including up walls toward the ceiling. By adjusting the speed and temperature of the airflow, technicians can dry everything from furniture to fragile drywall. Since this is outside flood damage, teams cannot guarantee the cleanliness of any carpets. After removing the water, the safest option is to dispose of them immediately rather than waste time and resources trying to clean them.
With other property, technicians wipe down or spray every surface with another anti-bacterial cleaner. Where necessary, team members use scrub brushes to work the cleaner into items like sofas or upholstered chairs.
For SERVPRO of Jamestown / Olean, the goal is to return every home to a clean, pre-flood condition. If you have had any water come through your home, contact our office immediately at (716) 338-4901 to schedule a service call. We are here for you.

SERVPRO Helps with Unexpected Black Water Cleanup in Olean Home
When it comes to water cleanup, there are three categories of water damage, and each possesses unique requirements for thorough mitigation. Clean water generally is the least worrisome in terms of potential contaminants. Gray water (sometimes referred to as "sullage") and black water have the potential to cause more damage because it is difficult to clean and restore porous items (such as carpet and padding for example) to safe, sanitary standards for use in a home.
SERVPRO received a water cleanup request from an Olean homeowner returning from vacation to water pooled in the kitchen and an overpowering odor. Even though the water emanated from a "clean" source, the supply line into the refrigerator, because it had sat in the house for a minimum of two days, we needed to handle it as a black water level mitigation.
The kitchen and adjacent living room received the impact of the water. Our technicians wore protective clothing and extracted the water using portable pumps. The laminate floor and subfloor in the kitchen were a loss as was the carpet and padding in the living room and required removal. The water wicked into the sheetrock in several areas, and our technicians performed flood cuts where we measure the highest water intruded into drywall and then removed the damaged wall material about six inches above the water line. We then dried, sanitized, and got the water loss areas ready for repairs.
Because the homeowner's insurance covered sudden water loss events, our technicians worked closely with the adjuster from the homeowner's insurance company to stay within the restoration budget parameters while still accomplishing a thorough and complete clean up of the water damage. Our goal is to take as much stress as possible off homeowners, and we give detailed reports to both the adjuster and homeowner, so everyone is on the same page for the stage of remediation the property is in, from start to finish.

Should you have any disaster that needs cleanup, call us today at (716) 338-4901, and we can have a team on their way to you within hours.
Preventing Flood Damage To An Olean Rental Home
New York's spring rains can leave plenty of street floods and groundswells that can easily infiltrate homes and soak carpets, furniture, and drywall with contaminated groundwater. The resultant damage to your home, if not addressed quickly, can leave you with more to worry about than wet carpet: mold, bacteria, and even structural damage to the subflooring, and more. The prospect of cleaning up such damage can be overwhelming to consider for anyone.
If you come home from work to find flood damage in your Olean rental property, our SERVPRO professionals are ready to go to your home and leave it looking “Like it never even happened.”
When ground flooding affects a carpet, removal is required to prevent further damage from contaminated water. If there happens to be flooring underneath your carpet that acts as a vapor barrier, such as laminate floors, it may have to be removed to dry the subflooring in your home. Our SERVPRO technicians can begin mitigation by removing any water in surfaces with portable, back-mounted extractors. The extraction process is crucial to ensure that drying is done as efficiently as possible, and our technicians can monitor moisture levels on, in, and behind structures with infrared imaging, moisture sensors and meters, and more.
After the water has been extracted, drying in your living room entails setting up centrifugal air movers and industrial-grade dehumidifiers to pull moisture out of surfaces and supply the area while the collected moisture is removed and humid air is replaced by warm, dry air. For drywall in your living room that has had significant exposure to water, flood cuts may be made to facilitate moisture removal. After drying walls, flooring, and furniture, we can clean your surfaces with an EPA-registered antimicrobial as an added protection from mold or bacterial proliferation from contaminated water.
SERVPRO of Jamestown / Olean is just a phone call away 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including all holidays. Should you have any disaster that needs cleanup, call us today at (716) 338-4901, and we can have a team on their way to you within hours.

Washing Machine Drain Hoses Can Cause Water Damage in Your Jamestown Home
The drain hose on your washing machine is busted, so what now? Without a fix, water can quickly penetrate washroom floors and carpeting, potentially damaging sub flooring. Our professionals have the ability to limit water damage in your home and help prevent hazards such as rotting.
Time is of the essence when it comes to water damage in your Jamestown home, which is why we can respond to your calls 24 hours a day to quickly begin the mitigation process. Once dispatched, our IICRC, Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification, certified professionals can rapidly arrive at your Jamestown home to begin mitigating water damage. Our techs start by inspecting your home to find the source of the leak. We can repair minor drainage hose issues, however, a plumber may be needed in cases of severe leaks. Once the source of water leakage has been plugged, our SERVPRO technicians can get to work extracting water from your home. Leaks from household appliances like washing machines are often minor and we can use industrial grade wet vacuums to clean up standing water.
Once water has been removed, we can begin searching for excess moisture in your home. Detecting the extent of moisture penetration in your carpeting and flooring is as easy as using moisture meters. If excess moisture is detected in your carpeting, we can use carpet tools to disengage carpet from the sub flooring. Once your house and carpeting has been dried, we can reattach and reseal your carpets. However, some carpeting may have to be discarded and replaced if it is severely water damaged.
To help ensure that your sub flooring is not at risk of rotting, we can deploy air movers to force water out of your floor. Dehumidifiers can also draw moisture out of the wood to quickly dry out your home.
If you have experienced a washing machine leak and need assistance, then contact SERVPRO of Jamestown / Olean at (716) 338-4901. We are available 24/7 and can immediately put you on track to getting your home back in order.

Handling Flood Damage to Your Jamestown Residence Caused by Fallen Tree Branches
If you have lots of attractive mature, trees, you may deal with damage to your roof. The long, large branches could fall on your roof due to tree rot or strong winds during a heavy rainstorm, causing your attic to flood and water to begin dripping into the ceiling.
At that point, you’ve got a flood damage emergency and the potential for incurring thousands of dollars worth of damage. If you have flood damage to your Jamestown home, it is advisable to hire IICRC certified technicians from SERVPRO to assess the destruction and to know what you are up against. Our technicians can scope the damages and create a mitigation plan to restore your property to its preloss condition.
Our technicians have the training, equipment, and experience to manage the flood damage restoration project through to its completion. Our SERVPRO team can arrive at your home fast with the equipment to start extracting the water while our licensed contractors remove the tree and the limbs from against your property and fix the areas broken by the fallen branches.
We can use equipment like wet/dry vacuums to remove water from the attic floor. Sheetrock may complicate drying, and for that reason, we can demolish damaged sheetrock to make it easier to dry structural components in the attic area. Our technicians may also remove sheetrock to access areas within the attic. If there is insulation in the attic, replacing it is necessary.
If there is water in other areas of your home, we can dry exposed contents, materials and surfaces. We can set up air movers in the affected spaces to improve evaporation at the surface level and reduce drying time. Air movers introduce heated air at the surface levels and replace the saturated air with drier air to enhance evaporation. We can restore most of the wet contents and materials. Our goal is to provide fast recovery while minimizing the overall expense of flood damage restoration, often with minimal or no disruption of affected areas.
When a tree falls on your home, causing water to pool inside, SERVPRO of Jamestown / Olean can get your property back to normal quickly. We seek to make the damage appear “Like it never even happened.” Call us at (716) 338-4901 and leave the rest to our technicians.

What Restaurant Owners Need To Know About Mold
Don't let mold damage invade your resturant.
Tips from SERVPRO about Mold Damage
If you run a restaurant in Olean, New York, you know how vital it is to keep mold growth at bay. If an inspector finds mold in your establishment, you could be hit with fines and even closures. If someone falls ill due to mold you neglected, you could even face a lawsuit. Keeping high humidity and water damage to a minimum can help. Furthermore, you can avoid mold problems by answering these questions:
• What makes mold in restaurants?
• Where will you likely find mold?
• What can you do to prevent mold?
• What should you do if you find mold?
Once you know these things, you can protect your business against this pesky fungus and all its negative effects.
What Makes Mold in Restaurants?
Mold is a notorious enemy of many restaurant owners, but what makes it so prevalent? Mold spores are everywhere, but they typically stay unseen and are not a nuisance. However, mold growth becomes a problem when high humidity takes over. Anyone who has worked even one shift in a restaurant knows that the kitchen is a hot, humid place in the middle of a rush. Combine the humidity and the dark corners in the restaurant, and you have a recipe for a mold problem.
Where Will You Likely Find Mold?
Check your restaurant’s basement, storage areas, and floors for mold. Furthermore, you may wish to check around any plumbing and in those often neglected corners of the kitchen. The darker and damper it is, the more likely mold will find a home there.
What Can You Do to Prevent Mold?
The best way to deal with mold is to stop it from infiltrating your restaurant in the first place. You can do this by conducting visual inspections regularly. Furthermore, you may want to install excellent ventilation systems. These systems can keep you from having the high humidity that makes mold an issue.
What Should You Do If You Find Mold?
Don’t try to tackle this problem yourself. A professional remediation service in Olean, New York, can take care of the mold growth correctly and get you back on track soon. Contact SERVPRO of Jamestown / Olean today for all your mold remediation needs at (716) 338-4901.

If Water Has Damaged Your Drywall In Your Jamestown Home, Call Our Specialists!
Our SERVPRO of Jamestown / Olean rapid response team is available 24/7 to restore the effects of a water loss incident to your home.
Responding To Saturated Drywall Quickly In Your Jamestown Home
When water loss incidents originate in the walls of your Jamestown home, drywall can quickly show the effects of this unexpected disaster. Within 24 hours, this drywall can become too overly saturated to get preserved through our restoration approaches, leaving no other option but flood cuts or entire removal of affected panels. To avoid what can sometimes be costly reconstruction efforts, even with our controlled demolition techniques, you should get our professionals working on water removal and drying as promptly as possible.
While you should work to shut off the valve supplying the service line of your home, this does not remove the water damage that has already begun to take hold. Our SERVPRO professionals have effective moisture detection and thermal imagery cameras to help us identify potential problem areas where moisture pockets have formed. These tools can direct our technicians to areas that require the most concentrated drying and extraction efforts, and where drywall has become most saturated by the water loss incident in your Jamestown home.
In the matter of a day, saturated sheetrock drywall can begin to erode and degrade. These effects cannot get reversed or restored once they have started. The only preservation of affected drywall occurs by our SERVPRO team working before the deadline gets reached where this material becomes unsalvageable. In these situations, we can employ our air movers, dehumidifiers, and injectidry system to remove moisture from the material and the wall cavity beyond it.
Beyond this deadline where drywall is no longer salvageable, our team must determine the extent of the damage to the material. We tape off the moisture line that separates dry material from the wet, saturated base towards the flooring. We can utilize controlled demolition techniques to remove this affected portion of drywall indicated by our flood cut line to make later reconstruction faster and more cost-effective.
Certain materials cannot withstand direct moisture exposure for long before they become too damaged to save. Our SERVPRO of Jamestown / Olean rapid response team is available 24/7 to restore the effects of a water loss incident to your home by calling (716) 338-4901.

Four Ways to Prepare Your Business for Bad Weather
Having a proper plan can keep your business safe
Preparing Your Business
When you are expecting bad weather such as a snow storm in Lakewood,NY , it might be tempting to carry on business as usual. However, this is rarely a good idea. Storms can create an unsafe environment for you and your workers, so you should make sure that you are properly prepared. Here are some ways to keep your business safe during bad weather.
1. Watch the News to Stay Informed
The first step in being prepared is to stay informed. If you don’t know what is happening, you can’t protect yourself or your business from it. You should make sure to watch the local news and weather reports when you are expecting a big rain or snow storm so you can plan accordingly.
2. Have a Bad Weather Policy
It is a good idea to create a policy for bad weather before you need it. That way you can ensure that all of your employees know what is expected of them in an emergency situation. Having a thorough bad weather policy that includes procedures for a variety of weather conditions will enable everyone to be on the same page. Be sure to include information on when workers will and will not be expected to come into work.
3. Create an Evacuation Plan In Case Of Emergency
If you have employees working during inclement weather, it is important to have an emergency evacuation plan in case things turn bad quickly. Have a designated escape route that you can use to get everyone to a safe area and make sure everyone is familiar with the plan.
4. Protect Your Building
If you are expecting a storm, you should take steps to protect your building as well as your workers. Focus on protecting against moisture by sealing doors and windows as well as keeping the temperature above freezing. If a pipe burst, it could flood the building and leave you needing water damage repairs.
While a snow storm might just seem like an inconvenience, it can easily turn dangerous. Having a proper plan can keep your business safe.
5 Ways To Upkeep a Commercial Roof
Commercial Roof Damage in Jamestown, NY
Roof damage or deterioration can be very costly. In addition to the price of materials and labor for repairs or replacing a roof, this damage can also damage building materials and contents. Property owners can follow five simple steps to preserve the condition of a commercial roof.
5 steps to preserve your roof.
- Inspect the roof at least twice a year. Make sure you know about potential issues and all of your upkeep options to extend the life of a roof. Do this by having experts perform annual inspections. If you know what to look for, you can do at least one of these inspections yourself.
- Trim trees with overhanging branches. Reducing the number of branches and leaves that accumulate on the roof can help to keep drainage systems clear. Tree maintenance can also prevent heavy limbs from falling in the event of high winds or adverse weather conditions.
- Clear drainage systems regularly. Water that cannot drain may pool and work its way under roofing materials, resulting in leaks. Make sure that leaves and other debris are not blocking downspouts, drains, or gutters, and that drainage is routed away from the foundation.
- Regularly repair minor roofing issues. Extend the amount of time before a roof rebuild by addressing roof damage as soon as it occurs.
- Have your roof waterproofed. Waterproofing can help to prevent cracks and leaks. A roofing service can help you determine the right methods and materials for your property.
A regular maintenance schedule can help property owners address roof damage and wind damage in a timely manner. Keeping an eye on the condition of your roof can extend the life of this part of your building and prevent costly leaks. If a roof sustains damage or deteriorates to the point where the interior suffers water damage, property owners should contact a company in Jamestown, NY, that specializes in commercial damage restoration.
Four Things to Do After a Fire
Don't be a victim of a fire in your Olean, NY home
What To Do After Fire
Being the victim of a fire in Olean,NY can be devastating. First the flames hit, then came the fire hoses, and now you are looking at your home and possessions with questions: what do I do now, who do I call and what is fire restoration. Here are four things to think about once you are faced with soot, smoke and damage cleaning.
1. Don't Spread the Debris
Try to minimize how much you move around the damaged areas once you return to your home. The more you move around your rooms, the more soot particles attach to your hands and shoes. When you move from a damaged room to an untouched room you can track the debris into a previously clean room.
2. Remove Damaged Items Safely
Start the fire restoration process by removing damaged items. Objects with soot or smoke damage, such as dishes, books and artwork, can be easily removed. However, some items can be harder to move because they've become water logged. Rugs, sofas and carpeting can be deceptively heavy and should be carefully withdrawn.
3. Get the Soot Out
Soot, the fine particulate matter that can land on every surface, needs to be completely removed to mitigate both its impact and potential for future damage. Flat surfaces are the most visible places for soot to land, but it can also end up on vertical blinds, light bulbs and porous air filters.
4. Don't Try to Wash It Away
Electrical appliances need to be assessed for damage before they get cleaned. Likewise, upholstery, woodwork and painted surfaces should be cleaned by professionals who know the right cleansers for each surface. You want to ensure that both fire and smoke damage are addressed during cleanup.
A fire can be a devastating catastrophe in Olean,NY if you don't know the fire restoration process. Following a few simple steps can make that process much easier.
3 Things You Should Know About Mold Growth in Kitchens
Mold can grow anywhere
Knowing Why Mold So Often Grows in Kitchens
Whether you notice mold in your fridge or bread mold, the presence of mold in your kitchen in Olean,NY can be frustrating. However, knowing more about why mold so often grows in kitchens can help you prevent mold in your own kitchen.
1. Mold Thrives in Humid Environments
Kitchens are often the perfect environment for mold growth due to frequent high levels of humidity. Many appliances in the kitchen use water, which can also increase the chance that mold will grow. Though it isn’t always possible to keep humidity low while cooking, using fans or opening windows to improve the airflow in the kitchen can help to lessen the likelihood that mold will grow.
2. Mold on Certain Foods Is Common
Seeing bread mold is not uncommon, though many people are unsure why mold grows on bread so often. In addition to needing water, mold also needs organic material to grow. Fungus growth can appear on a variety of foods, but mold on bread is particularly common because bread is often stored in warm environments, such as in breadboxes, and bread is a good source of food for mold.
3. Mold Can Grow in Cooler Environments
Though some people may believe they don’t have to worry about mold growing in cooler areas in their kitchen, mold can in fact grow in a wide variety of temperatures and environments. Fridge mold is one of the most common types of mold growth in kitchens. Though keeping your kitchen at a cooler temperature can help prevent mold in some instances, it’s also helpful to keep all surfaces, including inside the refrigerator, clean in order to prevent mold growth.
In combination with an understanding of where mold tends to grow and why, steps such as keeping your kitchen cool and dry, store food appropriately and keeping your kitchen clean can make it easier to prevent bread mold and other types of mold growth in your kitchen. However, if you need assistance with mold removal, it can help to contact mold remediation specialists.

Prevent a Disaster With Proper Fire Sprinkler Maintenance
Fire sprinkler maintenance is an easy thing to forget when most businesses will never experience a fire. Fire sprinklers on your Lakewood,NY, property need to be checked regularly in order to prevent a disaster. When sprinklers fail to turn on, the fire damage can be devastating. Follow these simple steps to ensure your sprinklers work well.
1. Make Sure the Water Is Turned On
It may seem obvious, but missing this step can be devastating. Confirm the water valves leading to your sprinklers are turned on. This step needs to be performed after all maintenance jobs involving water valves.
2. Do Not Paint Over the Sprinklers
Perhaps it is tempting to paint over fire sprinklers to help them blend into the décor. However, it is important to remember they are functional, not decorative. Paint can block water flow, thus preventing them from fulfilling their purpose.
3. Do Not Block the Sprinklers
Make sure you do not block sprinklers, especially when utilizing precious storage space. Sprinklers cannot do their job well if they are obstructed.
4. Check for Corrosion or Build-up
This sprinkler maintenance step is similar to not painting over the sprinkler system. Make sure to periodically check for corrosion or buildup so the sprinklers can work optimally.
5. Make Sure the Sprinkler Pipes Don’t Freeze
Saving money by turning the heat down in an empty building may seem like a practical choice. The problem is that wet pipes can freeze in cold temperatures, preventing the sprinklers from functioning properly. Keep your building warm enough to prevent freezing pipes.
6. Do Not Hang Things From Sprinklers
While it is tempting to hang items from sprinklers, remember that sprinklers are not meant to hold any kind of weight. Hanging things from sprinklers can cause them to bend or break, and a broken sprinkler is no help if there is a fire.
Keeping up with your fire sprinkler maintenance is just as important as fire prevention. Even with proper maintenance, accidents can still happen. When they do, your emergency restoration services partner can help get you back to work again.
What Causes Water Heater Noises?
Opening the valve of your water heater in your Jamestown, NY home may stop the first two noises
Sediment is the most common cause of water heater noises. Find out more about this buildup, other components that can cause noises, and how to make a heater operate more quietly.
Minerals precipitate out of heated water and form scale over time. Sediment usually consists of:
- Calcite (calcium carbonate)
Buildup in the bottom of a water heater may crack or pop as water heats under a layer of sediment and forces its way up through deposits. This may result in overheating and will force a heater to work harder. Use a deliming solution or perform a water heater flush.
Water makes a distinctive noise when forced through partially closed valves. Heater valves may make several different noises, including:
Opening valves may stop the first two noises. The last two sounds are typically caused by check valves and heat traps near the top of the heater that prevent water from flowing in the wrong direction. A dialectric nipple may put a stop to these noises.
Pipes make knocking noises for several reasons. These may include:
- Sudden stoppages
Pipe vibrations can damage walls over time. Consider installing anti-hammer devices. If a pipe bursts, a homeowner should contact a water damage mitigation service.
If an electric heating element works loose, this may result in a humming noise or vibrations. Check the position of the element and tighten the connection if necessary. Tankless heaters may click when the flow switch turns on or off or make other noises due to malfunctioning parts.
There are a number of ways to stop or reduce noises caused by almost any type of water heater. A homeowner can attempt to resolve the problem or contact an appliance repair professional. A leak can result in water damage at a residence in Jamestown, NY.
How To Make a Home Fire Escape Plan
Practice your evacuation plan in your Olean, NY home
A fire escape plan should account for the layout of a home and the needs of the occupants. This guide to making an emergency escape plan draws attention to several factors you should consider. Planning ahead can promote the safety of every occupant in a household in Olean, NY.
Plan Evacuation Routes
A fire plan should have at least two evacuation routes from every room in a house. To develop this plan you should:
- Work with an accurate floor plan
- Practice using evacuation routes
- Factor in the age and physical condition of occupants
If your home has two stories, you may want to invest in a non-combustible escape ladder. Keep hallways and other passages clear at all times.
Plan for Children
It is very important to account for children in a fire escape plan. In addition to child-appropriate evacuation routes, it is also a good idea to teach kids:
- How to roll out of bed
- Fire crawls
- How to check doors
You may want to test a fire alarm during drills so that children will associate these safety measures with the sound. It is important that kids participate in drills.
Plan for Pets
A homeowner can take several measures to promote pet fire safety. It is a good idea to:
- Post pet decals near the front entrance and exterior doors
- Store pet records in a fire box
- Practice evacuating with pets
A decal should indicate the number and type of pets in a household. A fire box can be easy to grab, but may also protect important documents if it is left behind.
The Red Cross provides further guidance on developing a fire escape plan. If a fire breaks out at your home in Olean, NY, contact the fire department as soon as possible. Once the fire is extinguished you should schedule a consultation with a fire damage restoration company.
3 Ways To Contain the Spread of Mold in Your Commercial Property
Mold damage on wall in a Falconer,NY commercial property
As a business owner in Falconer,NY, you’ve presumably experienced various trials and tribulations concerning the care and maintenance of your building. However, some situations require more than your basic cleaning regimens, like the intrusion of black mold. This destructive entity can cause issues within your building, both to the infrastructure and with your employees or tenants, so taking quick action with mold cleanup is crucial for everyone involved. Here are three ways to contain the spread of mold damage and spores due to a moisture problem in your commercial property.
3 Ways to Contain the Spread of Mold Damage
- Contact a professional cleaning crew to sterilize the building. While some tiny pockets of mold damage may seem easy to clean and wipe away, the reality is that spores can dig in and take root in the structure of a building, while microscopic spores can be spread easily through various means. Therefore, it’s important to hire an experienced team of trained mold remediation specialists who know exactly how to eradicate the problem and keep it contained more sustainably.
- Shut off the HVAC system until technicians arrive. Speaking of mold spores, one of the easiest ways for mold to spread in your building is via the ventilation airflow. Your HVAC system can blow black mold spores throughout the building, creating more hazardous areas in the process.
- If the damage is critical, shut off the water supply as well. Mold more often than not grows due to a moisture problem in a commercial property. Whether there’s a leak in the basement or attic, storm damage to a roof, or inefficient window or door sealing, shutting off the water supply and stopping the moisture from continuing is key to preventing more mold damage.
Your commercial property in Falconer,NY, often requires a period of more intense cleaning to keep it tidy, safe and under control. When you experience a black mold issue, taking quick action and eliminating its spread is vital to maintaining a clean environment for everyone.
Fire Damage Restoration Cost: Understanding the Estimation Process
Cleaning up after fire in Olean,NY
Fire Damage Restoration
A commercial fire is devastating to a business owner, but the remediation process is overwhelming. To alleviate some of that stress, it is crucial to understand what goes into an initial estimate and the final cost of the restoration project.
1. Initial Clean Out
After fire damage, it is essential to clean out the area to prevent further damage. Many remediation specialists will come out to the property immediately to remove any excess water that has pooled in the building as well as any visible debris that can be discarded. If you choose to stay with the same company, these initial services will likely be added to the final restoration cost.
2. Evaluation and Assessment
While it is in your best interest to know the costs of rebuilding your business as quickly as possible, you may need to be patient. Before offering a complete financial estimate of the restoration work required to restore your business, a restoration service will likely send two individuals to your property.
- Restoration project manager: This individual is responsible for assessing any cleaning, deodorizing and moving requirements of your property.
- Reconstruction project manager: This individual is responsible for assessing any structural damage to your property.
- Security Considerations
After any major disaster, it is often necessary to secure the premises in more ways than one. Many times, after a fire has occurred, it may be vital to hire 24-hour live surveillance. These guards will ensure that your property is protected when restoration crews are not available, and these guards will be considered part of the restoration package provided by many reputable companies.
4. Restoration and Board Up Services
While every company will have a different methodology for evaluating and estimating restoration costs, most emergency fire remediation specialists in the Olean,NY, area will provide immediate assistance after a fire. The cost of the initial water removal and board up services will likely be rolled into the overall cost of the project.
Understanding the components of a fire restoration estimate can go a long way toward relieving owner stress and concern. However, the greatest stress reducer is the knowledge that restoration services exist.
How To Find the Right Shutters for Your Home
Prepare your home in Portville, NY for storms
Type Of Shutters For Your Home
When storm season approaches, you want to make sure your home in Portville,NY, is ready to weather the high winds and potentially torrential flooding that often come with it. One way to do that is to fortify your windows with panels designed to shield them from the elements. Purchasing quality storm shutters for your whole house can range anywhere from $500 to $8000, depending on the type of shutter you buy. Here is a rundown of your options.
Plywood is a temporary solution, as you would not want to board up your windows permanently. It, however, has several advantages:
- Inexpensive (about $1 per square foot at most hardware stores)
- Easy to find
- Easy to install with a nail gun
Storm panels are also only installed when high winds are an imminent threat. They are bolted to the window frame and then removed when the storm is over. Depending on their size, they cost $7-15 apiece.
Accordion-style shutters are permanent fixtures to the house. They are typically made of polycarbonate or metal and stretch out manually from a folded position to protect the windows. They can cost anywhere from $15 to $25 per square foot.
A rolling shutter is installed permanently in a box that is bolted above the window. A mechanism rolls it down when needed to provide not only storm protection but also privacy and insulation. A quality rolling shutter can run $20-30 per square foot.
Bahama awnings protect windows from debris that gets tossed in a storm. They also serve as shade, which makes them well-suited to more tropical climates. They can cost $15-20 per square foot.
As the name suggests, colonial shutters are popular with homeowners who have a specific design aesthetic in mind. They unlatch and unfold when needed and can cost $200-$500 per window.
High winds don't have to wreck your home. Storm remediation specialists recommend finding the right storm shutters to protect your windows.
Removing Dryer Lint From the Exhaust Area
If you recently noticed a lot of lint buildup in the dryer at your Lakewood,NY, home, the risk of a lint fire might have crossed your mind. It can be especially hazardous for lint to build up in the dryer’s exhaust area. Here are five steps to take if you want to rid your appliance’s exhaust section from lint and avoid a dryer fire.
1. Clean the Lint Filter
Before you do anything else, make sure to clean off the dryer’s lint filter. You will also want to do this every time you are about to run the machine. You can usually remove this lint with your hand, but you can also run the filter under water.
2. Unplug Your Dryer
Before you do any further work to prevent a lint fire, make sure the dryer equipment is unplugged. Forgetting to do so could cause a dangerous accident.
3. Access Exhaust Area
Take off the panel at the back of the dryer and remove the hose at the machine’s exhaust area. You can then reach the inside of your dryer and the exhaust section to clean out lint.
4. Clean Dryer Interior
Your next task is to clean the interior of the machine and the exhaust area. A cloth and a vacuum are the best tools to use.
5. Repeat Steps Yearly
To avoid an accident that leads to fire damage, you generally need to keep your dryer as lint-free as possible. Repeat the four steps above every six months.
Lint fire prevention can seem very challenging, but the five steps above should really help you to be prepared. As long as you remember to keep checking for lint and getting rid of it when you do find it, you will be in a better position to keep your Lakewood,NY, home free of dryer fires.
3 Situations That Call for Flood Coverage
Ceiling damage from a roof leak in Olean,NY
Flooding can cause a great deal of damage to your commercial property, and your property insurance often doesn't cover it. If your building is in an area that is prone to flooding, you are required by law to have flood insurance, but it's a good idea even if it's not technically required where your business is located. You may think of a flood policy for your business in Olean,NY, as an extraneous expense, but if a situation arises where you need it, you'll be glad you purchased it.
When heavy storms strike, dropping a deluge more quickly than the area can handle, you may need a policy to pay for flood mitigation services. The property insurance in your commercial insurance package probably covers minor damage caused by a relatively small leak, such as:
- Wet insulation in the attic
- Water damage in walls from rain
- Ceiling replacement from a roof leak
If the storm persists and causes floodwaters that seep into your building and cause major damage, your flood insurance typically covers those repairs.
Overflowing Bodies of Water
If your business is near a lake, stream or river, prolonged rains can cause a flood, and this can affect your property. If the overflow reaches your building, there's probably not going to be any way to stop if from breeching your lower floors and causing quite a bit of damage to your building's structure. A flood policy can cover the repairs needed to restore your building.
If a levee or dam breaks, the area around it will probably not be able to avoid flooding. This type of flood can be especially devastating because the water may just keep coming until the hole is repaired. If you live in an area that would be affected by such a catastrophe, flood coverage is generally a must.
No matter where your commercial property is located, it's a good idea to have flood insurance. It offers protection beyond what your property insurance covers, and it can be the fastest way to get your building repaired after a flood.
How To Fix a Flooded Basement
Flooded basemente in Jamestown,NY
Despite your insurance coverage, a basement flood may be a terrible thing that can leave homeowners in complete disarray. Thankfully, the cleanup process can be straightforward and manageable. Follow the steps below to restore and protect your home from current and future flood concerns.
1. Pause and Be Safe
While it may be instinct to rush into a flooded basement and salvage everything as quickly as you can, you may want to slow down and take in your surroundings. Floodwater presents both slip and fall and shock hazards. Before entering the damaged area, turn off the electricity and put on protective clothing, like rubber boots and gloves.
2. Drain and Tear Out
Cleanup from a basement flood often requires the removal of excess water and the tear out of drywall and insulation, depending on the extent of the damage. You can rent a variety of pumps, either submersible or above ground, to quickly remove water. When removing drywall and insulation, consider tearing away material at least 20 inches above the water line to prevent any mold growth.
3. Discard and Salvage
While many items may have sentimental value, be aware that porous objects like clothing and paper can carry bacteria and produce mold after a flood. Additionally, any appliances that were touched by the water may require inspection by a professional in Jamestown,NY, before further use. The main thing is to remove any sign of contamination.
4. Plan and Prepare
After a flood, you can install backflow valves, and sump pumps to help protect against basement flood reoccurrence. You may also want to inspect the grade of your landscaping as well to ensure that your homes drainage systems are in peak shape. Installation of preventative measures and routine maintenance can help prevent this type of disaster from happening again.
A basement flood can be a damaging and upsetting event. From the lost memories to the worrisome costs, a flood can be detrimental to homeowners. However, by following the above steps and preparing for potential future risks, homeowners can begin to ease even their worst concerns.
4 Reasons To Replace Polybutylene Pipes
Poly pipe damage in Lakewood, NY
Polybutylene was a common pipe material from the 1970s through the mid-1990s. Poly pipes were preferred due to their affordability and ease of installation. Over time, however, antibacterial treatments such as chlorine and other oxidants cause this material to break down. Here are four reasons to replace poly pipes with polyvinyl chloride or chlorinated polyvinyl chloride.
- Most building codes forbid the installation of poly pipes. If you own commercial property in North America, there is a good chance that building codes in your region bar the installation of poly pipes. Choose another material such as PVC or CPVC to make sure the plumbing in your building is up to code.
- Poly pipes cannot be repaired. The Quest fittings designed for polybutylene pipes are no longer manufactured, as this pipe material is not considered safe. You may be able to use push fit or transition fittings for copper, CPVC, or PEX pipes with the same outside diameter, but you will not be able to repair poly pipes with the connectors designed for use with this piping material.
- Water treatment chemicals degrade poly pipes. Chlorine and other antibacterial treatments may wear down poly pipes over time. This can cause chemicals to leach out of the pipes into the water supply to your building and may also lead to more frequent leaks.
- Poly pipes may introduce chemicals into water. As suggested above, oxidants are known to make this material brittle. As these pipes crack or flake and become vulnerable at fittings, this may expose occupants of your building to chemicals.
It is a good idea to replace polybutylene pipes in your commercial property with new plumbing materials to prevent breaks, contamination, degrading, and leaks. If your property in Lakewood,NY sustains damage due to a pipe burst, leak, or from any other source, contact commercial water damage restoration specialists.

How To Avoid Space Heater Fires
A space heater can provide extra warmth. It can also save on heating bills by allowing you to set the thermostat in your home in Jamestown, NY, on low while still heating the specific rooms you are using to a comfortable temperature. A burned space heater doesn't help you, though. To avoid space heater fires, you need to follow a few simple tips.
Give It Space
The heating elements on a space heater give off an impressive amount of heat, but they can turn into a fire hazard quickly if they are crowded. There are several guidelines to make sure you have enough space around your heater:
- Maintain radius of three feet from flammable objects
- Don't use near combustible substances, such as gasoline
- Keep children and pets away from heater
- Set it on a level surface so it doesn't topple over
Turn It Off
To avoid having a burned space heater when you leave the room, remember to turn it off. Space heaters should never be left unattended while they are on, especially if you leave the house altogether. In fact, it's a good idea to unplug the heater when you are not at home. Keep an eye out for a frayed or otherwise damaged cord.
Space Heater Tips
Keep It Clean!
Keep your space heater clean to minimize fire risk. Dust and other debris can turn a functioning space heater into an electric fireplace in a hurry. Replace filters regularly according to the manufacturer's recommendation so that dirt does not infiltrate the heating mechanism. Follow maintenance instructions so that it not only lasts a long time but also does not become a safety issue.
A burned space heater can turn convenience into a nightmare. By following these simple guidelines, you can increase your creature comforts while still keeping you and your family safe. To avoid having to call for fire cleanup with a restoration company, choose a space heater that is safe and use it safely.

Basement Flooding Solutions
Storm board up in a Olean, NY home
During storm season in Olean,NY , one of the most common areas of the home to flood is the basement. It has a few things working against it. It's below the flood line, and any flood from the house is likely to drain into it. Exterior cracks in the foundation below ground are harder to find and repair. If your basement floods, you need the proper equipment and probably help from flood mitigation experts to solve the problem.
Large Volume of Water
A large volume of water calls for quick extraction. While it's important to wait until the storm has passed and the flow of water into your home has stopped, you don't want to delay any longer than necessary. If you are pumping the water out yourself, there are a few things you may need:
- Sump pump to remove water
- Trash pump to remove water and debris
- Industrial hose
- Generator for power
Professionals typically pump water into a tank mounted inside their vehicle so that they can dispose of it safely in another location. If you do not have a safe place to pump the water, it may be useful to leave it up to technicians who have the equipment you lack.
Small Amount of Flooding
If you do not have standing water in your basement, or if you have already extracted it, you still need to dry out your basement after a flood. Even if surfaces are merely moist, mold growth can occur. Use a wet vacuum to leach water out of carpet or upholstery. You can also use a dehumidifier or set up large fans to dry out the area. Make sure that everything is dry so that your basement does not sustain further damage.
When your basement floods, it is a good idea to call professional cleaners to help fix it. They have the equipment needed to remedy the flooding and fix the damage.

What To Consider in Your Fire Damage Claim
Fire can be tragic to your home or business, be prepared.
A building fire in Jamestown, NY, can be a financial disaster, but it’s often surprising how much a property can be damaged even if the fire is minimal. Fire damage is not just limited to flame. Structural and personal property damage may also come from one of the secondary aspects of a fire, such as:
Your insurance adjuster may need records of purchases, photos, and floorplans to help with the claim. You are already aware of the structural damage for your claim, but don’t forget about damage to contents as well. Any photos you have of the buildings contents and structure before the fire can be helpful with your claim.
You may not even be aware of some damage because you don’t see it. Consider electronics equipment and appliances that may have been damaged by smoke and water, even though they were spared from heat and fire. These require cleaning to prevent further damage. Acid from smoke can corrode electrical connections, and water can damage components.
When you experience a building fire, you may have business losses, and your insurance may include coverage for these costs. These usually include the financial impact of not doing business, or additional costs that are needed to continue the business, such as:
• Revenues that you would otherwise have earned if it had not been for the fire loss
• Ongoing rent and utilities on a property that you can’t use due to fire damage
• Loss of production from being moved off your property or for a temporary relocation
• Loss of business because of employees that left as a result of the fire
Be prepared to provide a lot of documentation to a forensic accountant doing the legwork in assessing your losses.
The professional fire mitigation company you work with will be helpful with cataloging your losses and providing information for your insurance claim. They are efficient and organized with the process, minimizing your headache by providing all your fire damage mitigation and restoration needs with just one company.

What Should You Do If You Discover Water Leaking From Your Lights?
Water leaking from roofs can cause flooding in your home from a storm
When you come home, the last thing you want to see when you flick on the lights is water coming in through the ceiling and dripping from the light fixtures. Not only can an overhead flooding situation like this cause severe ceiling damage, water in a light could be a sign of potentially dangerous electrical damage.
Rule Out Emergency Services
Safety is always the No. 1 priority. Since water is a very efficient conductor of electricity, an overhead flooding situation that involves sparks or wet electrical equipment should be considered an emergency. Contact local emergency services and leave the residence immediately if you suspect any danger.
Protect Your Home
If it's not an emergency situation, complete the following steps to protect your home:
• Secure the flow of water at the source by closing the valves that supply water to the leaking appliance. If you’re not sure which valve to close, check for a main water valve that can shut off water to the entire home.
• If you notice water in a light or other electrical system, shut off the electrical power by flipping the main power switch to the circuit breaker. Remember, if you discover that the circuit breaker is wet or submerged, or if you are unsure, do not proceed. Instead, call emergency services.
• Once you or emergency personnel have secured both the water leak and electrical power, contact a qualified cleanup service that specializes in water damage and home restorations to prevent further harm from occurring.
Water and electricity don’t mix well. It is especially important to take precautions when attempting to manage a situation involving electricity and ceiling damage due to water intrusion. Nobody in Jamestown, NY, wants to find water in a light when they come home. Ensuring that you are preventing the original problem from getting worse is the best thing you can do before contacting restoration professionals.

Three Ways To Prepare for Flooding From a Storm
Protect your belongings from flooding from a storm in Jamestown
A severe storm can occur at any time of the year. These storms can produce heavy rains, which may lead to flooding. In Jamestown, NY, this flooding can be devastating if flood water reaches the inside of your home. Being prepared in advance is critical to ensure the least amount of devastation. Here are three things you can do to make sure your home and your valuables are protected from a flood caused by a storm.
1. Familiarize yourself with your insurance policy. Understanding what type of insurance you have and what it covers – before a storm occurs – is critical. Regular homeowner’s insurance policies may not cover water damage from floods. Coverage for flooding must often be purchased in a separate flood policy obtained from the National Flood Insurance Program. If you need flood insurance, purchase it before the storm because it can take 30 days for coverage to start.
2. Be aware of the conditions in your area. Know when a flood is possible in your area. Most communities have an emergency alert system designed to notify residents of emergency conditions. You should also be aware of whether your home is in a flood-prone area.
3. Protect your items of value and important papers. To avoid damage from flood water, any items of value or important papers (i.e. insurance policies, birth certificates, property deeds, etc.) should be placed in containers that are watertight. If possible, these items should be placed at a level that is high enough to prevent them from floating away if you have a flooded building.
In the unfortunate event that a storm occurs and your home suffers damage from flood water, you may need the help of an experienced professional who specializes in water damage to clean up your home. Although a flood can be a devastating and destructive event, using the tips above to prepare your home, along with the assistance of a professional experienced in cleanup of storm damage, can make the recovery process less stressful.

Get Smart About Smart Smoke Alarms
Protect your family with smoke alarms and test frequently to ensure your family is safe incase of a fire
People have been dreaming of home automation since The Jetsons appeared on television in the sixties. Homes in Jamestown, NY are finally getting smart now with cameras, thermostats, speakers and even smart lightbulbs. Did you know a smoke alarm can be smart too? Should you replace your current smoke detector with a smart device?
Smart devices are still using the same sensing technology that the old-fashioned devices use, which use either ionic or photoelectric. The smart part is that the device sends a notification to your phone whenever the alarm sounds. You will need wireless internet in your home for it to work, but here are some different device options for getting that notification on your phone:
* Install smart smoke detectors. If it's time to replace the devices in your home, consider replacing them with smart smoke detectors. Prices are coming down on these. Many models are still around $100 or more, but some are now around $40.
* Use smart batteries. This year, you can replace your smoke alarm's batter with a smart one that lasts for five years and sends you notifications. The smart battery is used in your current smoke alarm, pushing a notification to your phone whenever the alarm goes off. If the detector is solely battery powered, that smart little battery can also be used to hush the alarm. That doesn't work if the device is hardwired.
* Plug in a monitor. Instead of your nosey neighbor telling you when the alarm is going off, you can buy a monitor that plugs into an electrical outlet. This is a great option to get smart notification without replacing multiple smoke detectors in your home. Monitors listen for the frequency of another smoke alarm and send you a notification when that sound is detected.
When it comes to fire safety for your family, fire alarms are one of the most important ways to protect your family. If you do have a fire, thankfully a well-placed and well-maintained alarm will help your family get out fast and restoration specialists can help remedy any smoke and fire damage.

Mold is everywhere. The goal of a remediation company is not to eliminate it but to bring its numbers down to healthy levels.
• Mold is found naturally in all environments.
• Mold is a type of fungus with thousands or more species.
• Not all mold is “black mold” or toxic mold.
• Areas of high humidity and dampness encourage mold growth.
Determine the Extent of the Problem
If you discover mold, you should determine how it got there. Here are some things to consider:
• Take note of where you find the mold.
• Look for roof leaks or other sources of water damage.
• Don’t attempt to clean it up yourself.
• Have it professionally tested.
• Contact a licensed mold removal company.
What a Professional Mold Remediation Specialist Can Do
Once you have called in a professional company, its technicians should examine the size and scope of the mold contamination. Then affected areas should be identified and treated using specialized products and equipment. The time it takes for mold remediation will depend on the amount that needs removal. In general, the remediation process will take three to seven days based on how much there is to eradicate. What you should get when you hire a company that specializes in mold removal in Jamestown, NY, are trained technicians who have the proper equipment for the job, who have extensive experience with the problem at hand, and who are up to date on the latest EPA guidelines.
If you have black mold or other fungi in your commercial building, call in the experts to remove it. Getting the job done in the most expedient manner should be the highest priority for both you and the professionals you hire.

Don’t Wait To Replace Your Old, Leaky Toilet
Toilet Repair or replacement is important with a leaky toilet to reduce water damage to your home
Of all the upgrades you can make to your Jamestown, NY, home, replacing your toilet is probably not at the top of your list. However, if you’ve got a leaking toilet, this is not a project you can afford to put off. Sometimes the toilet repair is as simple as tightening loose bolts or replacing a water-supply tube, but in many cases a total replacement is necessary. Once you’ve determined the source of your leak and decided it’s time for a new toilet, follow these five steps to replace it.
1. Choose a replacement. Make the process as seamless as possible by having a brand new toilet purchased and ready to go before you get rid of the old one.
2. Dry out the leaking toilet. Turn off the water supply using the shutoff valve on the wall behind the toilet. Then clear the remaining water by giving it a flush. Make sure that the tank is completely empty by removing the lid and soaking up any remaining moisture.
3. Remove the old toilet. Disconnect the water-supply tube and detach the toilet from the floor by unscrewing the bolts. Lift the toilet by the bowl, gently rocking back and forth to break it loose from the floor seal. Once it’s free, place the toilet into an open garbage bag to prevent dripping as you haul it outside for disposal.
4. Prepare the surface. Plug the open floor drain with an old towel while you scrape off any remnants of wax or putty from the drain opening.
5. Install your new toilet. Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions carefully in order to avoid needing another toilet repair in the future.
Swapping out your old toilet may be simple, but if the underlying problem has been going on for a long time, you may have more extensive water damage than you realize. Contacting a restoration expert in Jamestown, NY, is the best way to ensure that you’re not dealing with the effects of a leaking toilet years down the road.

Black Water and Why It Matters
Storm Damage in Jamestown New York
When storms encroach on Jamestown, NY, water damage is a prevailing threat with immediate and long-term consequences. Not all water has the same impact, however, and when it comes to storms and flooding, black water is exceptional for the invasive effects it has on both property and patron. Considered highly contaminated, floodwater can devastate both property and air quality. Knowing the risks and how to handle a flood are key to protecting both your business and your people.
What Is Category 3 Water?
Category 3, or black water, is the worst classification of water damage. When aggressive storms bring outdoor water indoors, pesticides, fecal matter, and toxic organic materials are carried in, putting at risk the health of anyone in contact with the grossly unsanitary contents. Water in this category contains aggressive amounts of bacteria and microorganisms, alongside potentially pathogenic and toxigenic material. This contaminated water can flood your business during a storm a few ways:
• Sewage bursts

After extraction, any porous material touched by the contaminated water must be removed from the building, including carpet, drywall, and wood. Have You Tried These Top Air Purifiers?
Air Filtration devices can be helpful for your commercial business
When buying an air filtration device for your Jamestown, NY, home, there are a number of factors to take into account. Those factors include cost, ease of use, filter efficiency, and air flow. You may need to choose one factor over another depending on how you plan to use your system, or you may be looking for an air purifier that combines high scores on all. So which air purifiers do the best in different categories?
Best for Cost Efficiency
When it comes to cost efficiency, the GermGuardian AC4825 won’t put you out of pocket at a smooth $100 and no more. While it’s one of the cheapest air purifiers on the market, how does it stack up on other factors?
• Middling on filter efficiency
• Very low rating on airflow
• Decent rating on ease of use
Overall, it’s a good starter filtration system but may have to be replaced fairly soon for a more high-end model.
Best for Filter Efficiency
For filter efficiency, you can’t do much better than the Amway Quixtar Atmosphere. It rates nearly perfect on filter performance – meaning you’ll clear the most particulates from the air, including mold spores that could become mold growth.
Best for Air Flow

However, it falls a little short in filter efficiency – meaning that it may need that air flow to capture more spores and other particulates on each pass.
Best All Around

At $479, it’s a good cost investment when it hits nearly perfect scores on all factors, including filter efficiency, air flow, and ease of use. 5 Tips To Prevent Space Heater Fires
Space heaters can keep you warm in the winter months but could also cause fires.
Space heaters are a great way to keep your home warm during cold winter months. However, incorrect use can lead to a burned space heater that causes fire and smoke damage. Here are some tips to keep your Jamestown, NY, home safe and warm despite frosty temps.
1. Read the Manufacturer’s Instructions
It may seem obvious, but the best place to start is by reading the manufacturer’s instructions—and following them. If your heater requires fuel, only use those that are manufacturer-recommended. Keep filters clean. Take a close look at warning labels.
2. Keep Some Distance
One of the leading causes of heater fires is proximity to flammable materials. Be sure to keep heaters at least 3 feet away from curtains, clothing and furniture. Don’t place them on rugs or carpet.
In addition, keep the heater clear of any walking paths or high-traffic areas in your home. This will help eliminate any tripping hazards and prevent anyone from knocking it over or brushing up against it.
3. Plug It Directly Into the Wall
Extension cords and power strips should not be used. To help avoid overheating, always plug the appliance directly into the wall outlet, and don’t run the cord under carpets or rugs. It is wise to inspect the cord for damage before each use.
4. Turn It Off
Always unplug and turn a heater off before you go to sleep or leave home. Space heaters should never be left unattended.
5. Install Smoke Alarms
Smoke alarms should be installed near every bedroom and on every floor of your home. Make sure they work by testing them monthly. In the unfortunate event of a burned space heater, an alarm can help ensure that smoke cleanup is your biggest concern.
Space heaters are excellent appliances for keeping small spaces warm when it’s cold outside, but before you use one in your Jamestown, NY, home, safety should always come first. Remembering important safety tips will help you avoid a burned space heater and protect your life and home.

Containing Mold to Avoid Cross Contamination
Kitchen Mold Remediation
Mold is a type of fungus that sends out unseen spores that are often the size of a particle of dust. Because of the miniscule size and weight of each speck, movement such as vibrations, air currents, and water vapors can quite easily spread the fungi throughout a building in Jamestown, NY. But anyone that walks by a patch of mold can also fall victim to the sneaky way the particles spread because once in the air, the microorganisms can attach itself to hair, clothing, and skin. The spores can then be transported to other rooms within the building. This is especially true when disrupting a colony during cleaning. Here are some ways to prevent cross contamination when cleaning mold clusters because once cross contamination occurs, mold cleanup can become a nightmare.
1. When removing items from the affected room, use airtight plastic bags. Even wet articles of clothing can spread spores when carried from one room to another.
2. Use a plastic sheet to separate the mold infected area from the rest of the building. Make sure the sheet is sealed over the doorway before cleanup begins.
3. Wear protective clothing and a filtration mask when cleaning mold contamination. Once the area is clean, remove all clothing while still in the room. Remember to discard in airtight bags.
4. Do not spray moldy areas with chemicals or power washers during mold cleanup. Any type of air disruption can send the spores flying and infect other surfaces within the room, including you.
5. Contact a professional mold remediation crew to test the area. Before the containment barrier comes down, an inspection for mold spores may be considered necessary to insure the fungi have been eliminated, and the area is safe to reopen.
Even small projects can cause serious cross contamination if mold cleanup is not handled properly. That is why commercial building owners often call in mold specialists to guarantee fungus removal is handled correctly. Once the mold is discovered, act quickly to prevent a widespread problem.

3 Steps To Follow Immediately After a Pipe Break
Contact SERVPRO for your pipe break emergency
Significant water damage can bring your bustling business to a screeching halt. The main factor that determines how quickly you recover and get back to business as usual is your response time when you discover bursting pipes. The faster you can stop the problem, the better off you will be. Here are three things you can do to expedite the cleanup process.
1. Shut Off the Water
When professional technicians arrive to fix a broken pipe in your building, they can work faster if they have less water to contend with. The first thing you do, therefore, when you discover water damage in Lakewood, NY, is shut the water off at the source. Turn off the main water valve so the pipe does not continue to leak. It is also a good idea to shut off electricity in the area, particularly if the water is close to any outlets or equipment.
2. Call Professionals
After you shut down the water supply to the bursting pipes, contact water remediation specialists. They can help by conducting a thorough assessment of the problem and beginning the repair process. This process is not something you want to delay. Every minute that your commercial property sustains water damage is a minute when bacteria can multiply and mold can settle and grow. Timely restoration helps prevent further damage.
3. Alert Insurance
Once you have an estimate of what it costs to repair the damage, you should call your insurance company. An agent can explain what your policy covers. The company can also send an adjuster to survey the damage and decide what your claim is worth.
Water damage in Lakewood, NY, is not something anyone would wish on themselves. You can minimize the damage to your commercial property from bursting pipes if you cut the water off at the source and make arrangements to resolve it and pay for the resolution as quickly as possible.

3 Reasons You Need To Address Storm Damage Right Away
Storm Damage clean up can be a real chore
When a big storm rolls through Jamestown, NY, flood insurance adjusters can get really bogged down with work. It's always a good idea to call your insurance provider to start your claims process, but it may not be a good idea to put off addressing the damage done by the storm. There are a lot of reasons you should start making repairs as soon as you can get a residential storm damage remediation team scheduled.
1. Reduce Chances of More Flooding
Storms can cause all types of damage. Your roof may lose shingles, your home may lose siding, or your basement may flood. Your house can become more susceptible to flooding due to the damage. You need to fix any damage caused by a storm to ensure your home does not suffer from further storm and flood damage. If repairs aren't made, any rain can cause major problems.
2. Stop Mold Growth
If a storm causes flooding in your home, you need to address the water problems as soon as possible to make sure your home does not suffer from mold damage. Even if your home is affected by clean water, you could see mold problems start in 24 to 48 hours if the water isn’t taken care of properly. Your flood insurance may help cover the remediation costs, but it depends on your policy.
3. Avoid More Damage
Waiting to address storm damage until an adjuster can come to your house can leave your entire property at risk for more problems. High winds following a storm could rip off more shingles or siding. Damaged tree branches could crash down onto your car or house. Taking care of any issues as soon as possible can save you time and money in the future.
Many flood insurance policies require you to call in an insurance adjuster. However, you may want to start taking care of the damage before the adjuster can make it to your home. This is especially true if he or she has a full schedule.

Know What Happens to Your Home’s Materials When They Get Wet
Garage Water Damage in New York
Most people understand the noticeable damage to a home after a flood or pipe burst, but not many consider the underlying damage. Flooding of any kind, whether from a burst supply line, broken pipe, sewage backup or actual flood, can be severely damaging to a home’s structure. For instance, water damage can result in:
• Swelling wood
• Ineffective insulation
• Crumbling drywall
• Electrical issues
• Mold contamination
The Issues Posed by Water Damage
Water damage is much more destructive than many homeowners give it credit for. If not taken care of right away, moisture can eat away at your home’s structure over long period of time. For instance, when your home is invaded with water, the wood begins to swell. While swollen wood in and of itself is not an issue, it can create other issues throughout the home. You may discover that your doors don’t close without effort or that your door jambs are cracking. This is an indicator of pressure on your house’s frame. If too much pressure builds, it could impact the very foundation of your home.
In addition to swelling wood, water damage can render your insulation ineffective. Your home will become drafty, which is not only uncomfortable but also costly. If your insulation has been affected, chances are that your drywall has been impacted, too. It may start to crumble or become weak to the touch.
Another issue that may stem from past water damage is the electrical systems. You may discover that your circuits short every time you plug something in or that an outlet doesn’t work at all. Not only is this a pain, but it can also pose a fire hazard.
Finally, you may observe discoloration or a musty smell. If you notice either, your home is contaminated with mold.
From swelling wood to mold contamination, water can cause a significant amount of damage in a relatively short period of time. Don’t let your water damage get out of control; invest in water pipe repair and water restoration services in Olean, NY, right away.

The Mold Is Dried Out – Will It Go Away on Its Own?
Mold damage in Jamestown NY Home
A recent moisture problem in your Jamestown, NY, home left you with unwelcome mold growth. You were quick to act and removed any standing water as quickly as possible. You also took the time to run dehumidifiers and fans to ensure your home's humidity returned to and remained at an acceptable level. With all of this work, is there really anything else you have to do? Won't the black mold simply die without the moisture it needs to thrive?
Unfortunately, this particular fungus is hardy and needs only the following to grow:
With these four staples, mold can survive almost anywhere.
Dried-Out Mold Becomes Inactive
It is true that dried-out mold stops growing actively. Spores need moisture to multiply, so removing excess moisture can help you stop the spread of mold. However, any growth you have will stay exactly where it is. It does not dry up and vanish without a trace.
Dried-Out Mold Can Become Active
Once you have managed to remove excess moisture from the black mold, your worries are not over. If any sort of water, such as high humidity or a pipe leak, makes it to the fungus, you may have a reactivated patch of mold. This means it will start producing spores again at a normal pace and potentially spread to other parts of your home.
Dried-Out Mold Needs To Be Removed
The final step in the mold cleanup process should be the physical removal of the fungus. Without this step, you run the risk of encouraging mold growth in the future. Even inactive mold may send out occasional spores. If any of those land on a wet surface, the growth will kick into overdrive. To actually remove the fungus, you must clean nonporous surfaces that were contaminated and throw away porous materials.
Just because the moisture is gone doesn't mean the mold is. A residential mold remediation team can help you properly take care of black mold to help you make sure you don't have a recurring problem.

Understanding What Black Water Is
Water Damage in Jamestown
If your commercial building in Jamestown, NY, has recently been affected by flooding, you may be dealing with a lot of water damage restoration. As the storm damage cleanup crew works on your building, you may hear a lot of technical terms. If someone mentions black water in your building, what exactly does that mean? Water is considered black when at least one of the following situations are met:
* The water is highly contaminated.
* Flood water comes in contact with fecal matter.
* Wastewater from toilets enters your building.
* Untreated standing water starts to support microbial growth.
Now that you have a better understanding of what this contaminated water is, you may want to learn more about how you can bounce back from such damage.
After flooding, you need to react as quickly as possible. Getting the water out of your building can help reduce the structural damages. Also, if you're able to dry out and clean your furniture and equipment shortly after the incident occurs, you may have a greater chance of being able to keep many of your company's possessions. You may not be able to hold on to porous materials, especially when dealing with dirty flood water.
Because contaminated water can be dangerous, it is often a good idea to call in the experts as soon as possible. Trying to deal with this water damage on your own may not be a good idea because of the sewage, chemicals and microbes that are potentially in the water. Professionals will have the safety equipment needed to properly take care of the issue. Their equipment will also help them fix the problem faster.
Whenever you're dealing with water damage due to flooding, you need to be aware of the type of water you have in your commercial building. Clean, gray and black water each have their own potential problems and need to be taken care of in different ways.

Have a Plan in Case of a Fire
If a disaster strikes, you want to be ready for it with a contingency plan. A fire or flood, as well as many other possible disasters, could put you out of business. Ensure that your company is able to bounce back and resume operations in as short a time as possible.
There are many misfortunes your business might have to confront. Although you cannot plan for everything, here are some possible mishaps that you should plan for.
• Hard drive failure
• Data theft
Creating a Plan
The above risks are a sample of what your business might face. It is up to you to determine what risks are applicable to your particular industry and region of the world. This will give your contingency plan focus. Although you want to be prepared, you don’t want to waste time and money on things that are unlikely to happen.
Prepare an evacuation plan. Post it throughout the office. Your staff needs to know where to go, what routes to use to exit the building and when to make that call. Appoint department heads to ensure everyone is able to get out safely.
There needs to be a communication system in place. The contingency plan should detail the communication fan-out system. Who contacts whom? Update all email and phone numbers. Make sure contact lists are printed in case of a technology failure.
Update your on-site emergency kits and train your staff on them. If your business stores valuable data, take measures to protect it. Review your insurance policy and make sure it covers the disasters you find important.
Your contingency plan should lay out what is necessary to run your business at the base level. These are the absolute essentials for operating again. Make plans so that those resources are available as quickly as possible. Research alternate suppliers.
It is important to have a plan in case of an emergency. In the heat of things, it can be hard to make good decisions. A plan gives you something to rely on. You can even hire professionals in Lakewood, New York, to help you devise one.

5 Tips for Staying Safe While Using Space Heaters
Space heaters can be a great way to stay cozy. During cold weather in Jameston, New York, they can help you to be more comfortable in your home, but they can also be a fire hazard. Luckily, if you keep a few simple safety tips in mind, you should be able to avoid dealing with a burned space heater.
1. Keep the Area Clear
One of the easiest ways a space heater fire can start is if there are flammable materials in contact with the heater. Keep anything flammable, especially items made from paper and fabric, well away from the heater.
2. Choose the Right Location
Anywhere that is too confined can create a perfect recipe for a burned space heater. Don’t put the heater beneath desks or other furniture. Instead, try to put the heater in an open area where it won’t come into contact with anything.
3. Pay Attention
It can be dangerous to leave space heaters unattended. You should never leave them turned on when you’re out of the room or away from home. If you’re paying attention to the heater, you should be able to stop problems before they turn into emergencies.
4. Use Safety Features
When shopping for a heater, you can try to find one that has an automatic shut-off feature. While you still should never leave the space heater unattended, it can be one more layer of safety.
5. Keep Filters Clean
Space heaters have filters that can become clogged with dust, pet hair, or other debris in the air. Clogged filters can cause the heater to overheat and ignite. Clean the filter regularly to help prevent any issues.
Fires can be dangerous and lead to extensive (as well as expensive) smoke cleanup. Don’t get stuck with a burned space heater. Being mindful of how and where you use your heater can help you to stay safe.

3 Steps To Take After a Storm-Induced Sewer Backup
In Jamestown, NY after rain water builds up, a sewer backup can become a problem. Sewer water is always considered black water because of the bacteria and pathogens it carries. When it backs into your home or floods your basement, what can you do about it? Here are three steps you should take.
1. Shut Down Power
Water and electricity should never mix. Even if you can’t spot any electrical outlets near the water, you don’t want to take any risks with it. Make sure the electricity is off before you enter the area and before you call any specialists to help you with the water removal. Safety should always come first.
2. Check the Gas
In cases of flooding, the pilot light on gas appliances may go out. In this situation, you may have gas emissions leaking into your home. If the light is out or if you smell gas, then you need to call a professional right away. Do not stay in the building if you have a gas leak.
3. Extract the Water
As soon as possible, you need to have the water extracted. Collected rain water after a sewer backup can cause mold growth in a short period of time. Usually mold starts growing in as little as 24 hours. Make sure you have the water removed as soon as you can, or else the damage may become more extensive. The less time your home is saturated with water, the more damage you’ll be able to avoid.
Flood damage can be devastating, and when there’s a sewer backup in your neighborhood, it can be stressful and frustrating. These three steps should help keep you calm and safe after the events of a flood. While you may not be able to control the weather or the sewer lines, you can control what happens once the storm passes.

Flood Cleanup Checklist
You can leave it to a broken pipe to ruin your day. So, your residence was flooded and now it’s time to prepare the cleanup. This can be a daunting task to anyone, no matter if you have any experience with flood waters. Here’s a checklist of what you should do when it comes to taking care of your belongings after a water-in-home situation.
Carpets, Clothing and Rugs
Most of the time, the advice about carpets, clothing and rugs is to replace them. If it turns out that the rugs can be salvaged, spread them out outside. Here, you can hose them off and use carpet shampoo to clean them. This can be done using a broom to work in the detergent. Unless your carpet is made of wool, you can rinse it with a gallon of water and a couple tablespoons of liquid bleach. For clothing you hope to salvage, rely on dry cleaning to disinfect them.
If you look at your walls and see no signs of damage, you still want to take extra care with them. First, you should ensure that all the water in your property has been cleared out. If your walls aren’t dry, this is sure to lead to moisture problems down the road. If you have any mud or mold on the walls, then it’s time to clean them. In most cases, a formula of water and detergent can remove mold.
When it comes to your floors, remember to check for buckling or warping. This could mean you need to get the floor replaced. Floors should be dried out completely and if salvageable, cleaned in much the same way as the walls.
Of course, as with any cleanup efforts, utilizing restoration specialists can also help. If you have a water-in-home situation in Jamestown, NY after a broken pipe, consider this list to better handle it. Visit http://www.SERVPROjamestownolean.com for more information on water damage.
Category 1 Water Does Not Mean Category 1 Water Damage
Any broken pipe or supply line in commercial buildings in Olean, NY can lead to severe water damage. Experts in commercial restoration know that no two water damages are alike; a lot depends on the category of water involved. If you’re dealing with water damage due to category 1 water, you are exposed to sanitary water. Clean water does not pose substantial risk. What is category 1 water exactly, and what damage can it cause?
1. What Is Category 1 Water?
Category 1 water starts from a sanitary source. Examples for sanitary sources are faucets, toilet tanks, and drinking fountains. Nevertheless, be advised that this water can turn into unsanitary water based on time and temperature. Just because it’s category 1 water doesn’t mean that it cannot cause extensive damage. Clean water can cause four types of water damage.
2. What Are the Main Types of Water Damage?
Class 1 is the easiest to deal with as only small amounts of water are involved. Absorption and evaporation are minimal issues. The damage is limited to one room or one specific area. Carpet is only slightly or not affected at all, and only materials with low porosity have absorbed water.
Class 2 damage is characterized by larger amounts of water and a higher evaporation rate. At least all the carpet in a room is affected and walls are soaked in water up to 24 inches. The structure and substructure have absorbed moisture.
Class 3 water damage means that enough water has filled the area to be evaporated into or absorbed by everything in the room. It’s not uncommon that the water comes from overhead. Walls, insulation, ceilings, carpets, and sub-floors are saturated.
Specialty drying situations fall into class 4. Enough time has passed for water to affect materials with low porosity, including brick and concrete.
Clean water might be sanitary but it can be responsible for extensive damage. As soon as you notice a broken pipe or supply line, it’s important to take action. Visit http://www.SERVPROjamestownolean.com for more information on commercial water damage.

The most obvious sign of a mold infestation is visible growth. Like with most pests, what you see is not what you get. If you notice a patch of mold on your kitchen backsplash, on a ceiling or beneath the bathroom sink, chances are that your problem is deeper than what you can see.
Musty or Moldy Odor
Mold smells, period. Outside of the home, mold smells stale; on the inside, it smells musty and damp. If your home or any room in your home smells off—as in, it smells like a forest after a heavy rainfall—chances are that you have a mold problem and that it is time to call in your indoor environmental specialist.
Water intrusion can take on many forms, including flooding, burst pipes, sewage back up and a leaking roof. If your home has any of these issues, and if you have not taken measures to remedy them, you may have a mold problem.
If your home was in a flood in the past, and if you did not have a water remediation team in to properly dry and clean up the damage, you may have a mold problem. The only way to ensure that your home is mold-free post-flood is to let the professionals deal with the situation.
If you notice any of the above four signs, you may have a mold problem. However, you should call in your Olean, NY indoor environmental specialist to perform a mold test just to be sure.

Does My Insurance Cover Mold?
Does My Insurance Cover Mold?
When it comes to mold and fungus growth in homes in Jamestown, NY you know that it can quickly get out of control. If you have to work with a professional to get the mold removed, this can be a costly process. Because of this, you want to look into mold insurance or mold coverage to see if you can get some help with the expense.
Water Damage Coverage
Water damage is one of the most common causes of mold in a home. However, if this damage is due to maintenance issues, it may not be covered by your standard homeowner’s insurance policy. Such maintenance issues might include:
Landscaping drainage system problems
Ongoing humidity issues
Continuous water seepage
If mold and fungus growth are related to the issues above, or those that are similar, your policy could exclude them. It is important to read the fine print when you are getting your policy to see what it covers.
Specified Peril Policies
If the mold in your home is due to a specified peril, it may be covered. However, you have to look at the listed perils on your policy and be able to absolutely prove and one of these is the cause. It is not always obvious what caused you to have a mold issue. This is why most policies do not end up covering mold and the issues that it can cause. It is often recommended that you look into a separate policy that might cover it. Remember that mold is a common issue and one that you want to have some coverage for.
Since most insurance policies either do not cover mold or they might have a cap in place, talk to your insurance adjuster or a SERVPRO representative to determine what your options are. This ensures that you make the right choices in getting the mold in your home taken care of. Visit http://www.SERVPROjamestownolean.com for more information on mold.

5 Simple Steps to prevent spread of smoke/soot damage
Even in the wet season of spring, fires can occur. It is very common for property owners to reenter the building as soon as the fire is out to check on their furniture and other possessions. Here are 5 simple tips to limit further damage before SERVPRO arrives.
•Make sure everyone is safe and the fire is safely out before reentering the property.
•Limit movement inside to prevent soot particles from being embedded in upholstery and carpet.
•Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls, and woodwork.
•Place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery, and carpet traffic areas.
•Wipe soot from chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim, and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of lubricant.
Unfortunately fires happen, but by keeping these tips in mind and the expert restoration by SERVPRO of Jamestown/Olean your property will look “Like tt never even happened.”
What to do until help arrives with water damage in your home

When you have a water loss the first thing to do is get a professional to come out an assess the situation. It is very important to recognize what is safe and not safe within the home.
Do not lift or try to move wet materials. These can be very heavy and spread more damage within the home.

How the Professionals Restore Water Damaged Homes and Businesses
How the Professionals Restore Water Damaged Homes and Businesses
A pipe break, supply line break, dam break, hurricane, or other calamitous water-related event can happen at any time, putting much water in business offices and water in home spaces. This is disheartening after one has worked so hard to attain a home and fill it with belongings or created a thriving business and purchased a building for it. Picking through numerous items that are entirely destroyed can be emotionally distressing.
On top of all of the emotions, the work that lies ahead is too daunting a task for many owners to deal with. Draining and drying what is left of buildings and belongings can take a long time. By the time all of that water finally drains away or evaporates, there is major water damage to the flooded home or business.
What is needed for flood damage mitigation is efficient water cleanup and effective restoration to reverse the effects of water damage. This is best left to restoration company professionals whose service would ease the mind of people who have experienced a flooded home or business.
Determine Source of the Water
The first thing the restoration company professionals do in the process of damage mitigation is to find out where moisture or standing water in home areas and water in business offices came from. Quite often it comes from a pipe break or a supply line break. There’s no sense in starting the process of restoration if the source of the water problem isn’t fixed. Also, the work area is isolated in this way.
If the source is not a pipe break or a supply line break, the water could have come from a dam break or a natural disaster. Hurricanes have occurred often in recent months, leaving many people with a flooded home or business and no dry place to sleep, eat, and live.
Once the source of moisture or water has been determined and the work area has been isolated, the guys from the restoration company will do water cleanup using commercial pumping systems. Some companies can do heavy duty water cleanup, which is great news for people who have huge amounts of standing water to deal with.
Once the water cleanup is complete, the team will find out exactly what the flood damage from the pipe break, supply line break, or whatever is. Some things can withstand being submerged in water for a short time, while other things are utterly destroyed by the water damage. Damage will, of course, be worse if things have sat in standing water in home areas or standing water in business offices for days. A restoration company will assess the water damage to both the building and to belongings.
Damaged Item Removal
Contaminated and organic materials from a flooded home or office will be tossed first if they have been submerged too long. After 24 hours, particle board, plywood, drywall, casings, baseboards, and carpet will not survive. What survives the water in home areas and the water in business buildings will go to through a drying process.
Dry out What is Salvageable/Put Furniture Back
The building and the items thought to be salvageable are dried using high volume dehumidifiers, commercial air movers, and sometimes heat injectors. After the drying out process is complete, the restoration process is almost done. The furniture is put back into place, and trash is taken out.
Destroy Mold and Other Microorganisms
The water cleanup and drying were the biggest mitigation jobs, but the last thing the restoration company team will do toward flood damage mitigation is to destroy the mold and other microorganisms so that no pathogens can form. As much as is possible after flood damage has occurred, restoration is complete.

Four Reasons to Pay for Professional Commercial Fire Restoration
Four Reasons to Pay for Professional Commercial Fire Restoration
Unless you experienced a fire in the past, you probably have no idea of the effects that it can have on your building. The flames caused by an electrical fire or a utility room fire can climb higher and higher before spreading throughout the entire building. Even if the fire truck gets there in time for a firefighter to save the building and use a fire hose to protect other buildings from catching on fire, you'll still find yourself dealing with quite a bit of cleanup. Fire damage companies that specialize in commercial fire damage offer all the help needed to get your building back up and running again. If you think that you can handle the work yourself, check out the top four reasons to pay for fire restoration help.
Your Fire Sprinkler System and Water Damage
A good fire sprinkler system will have alarms that monitor various areas of the building for temperature changes that occur during a fire. As soon as it detects a temperature change, it will turn itself on and use water to take down the flames. That water can flow for hours until help arrives, which will leave you dealing with a significant amount of standing water as well as some flooded rooms. If you used fire suppression tools, you can hire fire restoration professionals to clean up the water damage and the suppression materials left behind.
Fire Truck Damage
When you see a fire truck or a firefighter outside of your building while it's on fire, you might thank your lucky stars that help arrived in the nick of time. Once that fire truck leaves though, you need to take a look at the damage that the fire hose and firefighters caused. A firefighter might use an ax to break down a door or smash through a window and use fire suppression materials to blanket a smaller fire. Hiring a commercial fire damage company to come out to your building for an inspection lets you know what they can do to remove those materials and clean up the debris and water left behind by fire suppression methods and a fire hose.
Safe Smoke Damage Removal
Whether you use your building as an office, a retail shop or anything in between, fire damage companies can help with the smoke damage cleanup and removal after an electrical fire. Event the smallest of fires can cause more damage than you could cleanup on your own with weeks of hard work. The smoke damage can leave behind a thick odor that makes you feel claustrophobic and wreaks havoc on your breathing. Commercial fire damage companies send their cleanup techs out with masks and other gear to help them stay safe while cleaning up your fire damage and soot damage.
Sooth Damage Cleaning Too
If you still aren't sure you should call for help after a utility room fire, think about how quickly and efficiently they can clean the soot damage caused by those flames. This type of fire damage includes more than just the thick build of soot that you see on your walls or on the floor. Soot damage can go so deep into the floors and walls that ever after cleaning your business, you still smell an intense smoky odor. It can mix with fire suppression methods and become even worse, and the soot can also spread because of the water produced by your fire sprinkler system.
Ask any firefighter what you should do after experiencing commercial fire damage, and you'll hear back that you should get some professional help. Soot damage and smoke damage are just some of the problems that you face after an electrical fire. A small utility room fire can set off a fire sprinkler system that puts out the flames but causes water damage, which worsens when combined with the water produced by a fire hose. The best fire restoration company can reset your fire sprinkler system and provide assistance after any type of fire, including a utility room fire or an electrical fire.

Effective Storm Damage Restoration is Essential for Maintaining Property Value
Effective Storm Damage Restoration is Essential for Maintaining Property Value
Professional home restoration services can be an essential asset for property owners who are seeking to protect their investment. Storm restoration needed to address wind damage or hail damage as well as effective water restoration services that may be required in the event that moisture is able to enter the home through frozen pipes or a roof leak can often be resources of great importance. Flooding, roof damage or ground water that is able to enter the home due to river flooding or hurricane damage can pose a significant risk to the market value of a home.
Wind, Hail and Debris
Even minor storm damage can pose a real problem, especially in situations where flood water or ice damage escape notice for any length of time. Access to a flood pump or professional roof repair services can be essential when it comes to ensuring successful storm remediation. From seasonal hurricanes to problems caused by an ice dam or ice damming, it always pays to seek out the best solutions for storm remediation. From repairing a simple roof leak to assessing the extent of hail damage and ice damage following a storm, addressing any roof damage promptly and without delay is always a smart move.
Ensuring effective water restoration and cleanup efforts are never a matter that should be left to chance. Flooding, the presence of ground water within the home or moisture that enters an internal environment due to a burst ice dam or frozen pipes may create no end of future problems. Whether flood water is caused by nearby river flooding, direct storm damage or hurricane damage or ice damming and frozen pipes, arranging for roof repair and storm restoration without delay may minimize the risk of a mold or mildew infestation. Access to heaters, dehumidifiers or a flood pump may be of critical importance for home restoration efforts needed to deal with wind damage or water damage.
Winter Storm Damage
While river flooding and hurricane damage is less likely to be a concern during the winter, colder weather and winter storm damage can still create serious problems. An ice dam or ice damming may do considerable harm to roofing installations, while frozen pipes and other types of ice damage may also require extensive storm remediation. Hail damage, snow accumulation and ice damage that may result in a roof leak can lead to extensive interior flooding. Arranging for storm restoration services, dealing with roof repair issues or utilizing a flood pump to ensure effective cleanup and water restoration within the home as quickly as possible can help to minimize the costs associated with winter storm remediation.
Roofing Installations and Property Value
Even minor roof damage or a roof leak can have a negative impact on property values. Addressing the home restoration efforts needed to deal with wind damage or hail damage can go a long ways towards ensuring flood water is not able to enter the home because of roof damage. While ground water seeping into the home or water restoration and home restoration efforts that may be required to respond to nearby river flooding are often significant concerns, flooding caused when a roof suffers from wind damage, an ice dam or ice damming may be just as serious when it comes to maintaining the resale value of a home.
Dealing With Hurricane Damage
Storm restoration and cleanup can be an even more important undertaking following a major storm. Hurricanes and tropical storms may require homeowners to seek out extensive roof repairs or deal with damaged caused by increased levels of ground water. Access to a flood pump as well as the other tools and resources that only an experienced professional may be able to provide is essential for ensuring that efforts to remove flood water from within the home are met with greater success.

What's behind your oven
When was the last time you did a deep clean of the kitchen? You probably mopped the floor and washed the sink but did you remembered that the space behind an oven is a prime spot for disgusting messes to accumulate? Homeowners tend to not bother cleaning behind their oven because it is a heavy object to move or are worried about messing with the gas line. This property in Chautauqua, NY had quite a bit of build up in that area. Luckily, our crew can tackle any mess! Cigarette Caused Smoke Damage
Of course, cigarettes are harmful to our bodies but did you know that they can also be very damaging to our home? Aside from the obvious fire hazard (house fires frequently occur due to smoking indoors), smoking can also cause unattractive stains to walls and the ceiling. Smoke, in this case from cigarettes, discolor paint and wall paper and often leave an unappealing odor engrained in walls, furniture, and carpet. Unfortunately the smell and staining can be hard to remove without a complete deep clean. We recently visited a property with this problem. As you can see there was pretty severe staining on the wall as a result of the cigarette smoke. Luckily our crew are experts in deep cleaning so the wall was left looking as good as new. Check out our before/after photo gallery to see the results!
How to Quickly Recover from Water Damage
How to Quickly Recover from Water Damage
All it takes is one pipe break or supply line break for hundreds of gallons of water to come gushing into a room. Water in home and water in business situations need to be taken care of quickly as it can otherwise cause a lot of damage. When there is water damage, it's important to know how a restoration company can help.
Understand the Extent of the Problem
Often, home or business owners put off the problem. They don't see water in business or homes as a problem because they think that they can handle the restoration on their own. It's just a little water cleanup, right?
This is one of the biggest mistakes that can be made. A flooded home is a big problem. The water could be leaking into other areas. if the water cleanup isn't handled quickly, it can then lead to mold, mildew, and other problems. The restoration has to begin the moment the water is out of there.
The best way to handle the problem quickly is to understand that there is a big problem going on and to call a restoration company to come in and begin working on getting the problem under control.
Call for Help
Rather than working on mitigation and drying on one's own, the best thing to do is call a restoration company from the very beginning. They will be able to help with a flooded home or business. They have the advanced equipment to pump the water out.
If there was a supply line break or pipe break, obviously the problem needs to be addressed. The main water supply needs to be shut off so that water in home or water in business doesn't get worse. Then, a plumber will need to be called to start the mitigation process.
This means that a flooded home or business will likely need help in all sorts of different ways. If a supply line break or pipe break isn't taken care of properly, it's only a matter of time before there is more water damage.
Some items might need to be tossed right away because drying isn't going to fix them. They have suffered too much flood damage and cannot be saved. This could include paper documents, electronics, and even furniture. From there, professional drying techniques should be used when a company that specializes in restoration comes in.
Whether it's water in home or water in business, mitigation has to take place. Mitigation is known as the act of reducing the severity. If it is a supply line break or pipe break, it starts with getting the plumbing fixed. If it is because of a flood, then the flood damage isn't over until the weather clears up. However, flood damage can be reduced by moving things to higher ground and obtaining sand bags.
Let the Professionals Help
Homeowners and business owners should know when they need the help. A DIY approach is never a good idea when it comes to water in home or business because of all the ways that water damage can affect a property.
A professional restoration company will be able to use advanced equipment to identify all areas of a home or business where there is water. This includes in flooring, behind walls, and more. It makes it easier to conduct a thorough water cleanup so that a flooded home or business is taken care of properly.
The water cleanup will be part of the mitigation. From there, restoration will be scheduled to take care of all areas that have experienced significant water damage. Drywall, flooring, and more might need to be replaced, especially if the flood damage was significant.

Trust the Pros: How Fire Damage Restoration Works
Trust the Pros: How Fire Damage Restoration Works
Fire in a home or fire in a business establishment can be life changing, and not in a good way. Unbeknownst to those who have not experienced it, the fire cleanup can be just as frustrating as the fire damage itself. This is because there are myriad hidden and secondary problems that come along with fire damage restoration, regardless if it is fire damage in a home or commercial fire damage. Smoke damage, soot damage, and even smoke smells left behind by the blaze continue to plague homeowners and business owners for years if the fire damage restoration is not handled properly. A professional restoration company can relieve much of the stress involved in restoration of residential and commercial fire damage, by following tried and true methodical fire cleanup procedures.
The first step in fire damage restoration for a professional restoration company is to send out an inspection and assessment team. This team will observe the fire damage, and prioritize which problems need immediate attention and what fire damage was simply cosmetic. Commercial fire damage can be especially harsh on structures depending upon what materials the business had on hand, and the extent of the fire in the business establishment. The inspection and assessment experts from the restoration company will identify if the commercial fire damage will require specialized tools or methods to remove more advanced smoke damage, soot damage, and smoke smell.
If the restoration company determines it is necessary, the next step is typically referred to as board up. As the term implies, board up is where the restoration company will literally board up broken windows and doors caused by fire damage or fire crews putting out the inferno. The board up step is done early on in the process to prevent the outside element from causing additional damage to the property.
The next stage seems counter intuitive, as instead of dealing with fire cleanup it turns to water cleanup. As it turns out, smoke damage, soot damage, smoke smells and other types of fire damage are not the only mutilations to a structure during a fire. This is because fire crews utilize massive amounts of water to douse flames when there is a fire in a home or business. The large amount of water can cause the same damage to an establishment as a flood or burst pipe. Therefore, professionals ensure that standing water and excessive moisture are removed before proceeding with the fire cleanup.
Once the water cleanup is complete, the cleanup process turns to the smoke damage, soot damage, and smoke smells left behind by the fire. Clean up teams are typically very experienced in identifying these types of damage, and are particularly careful in removing soot and smoke stains from everything. Smoke and fire are permeating, causing this particular task to be herculean for cleanup teams. Thus, many business and homeowners who experience a fire in a home or fire in a business turn to professionals to accomplish the chore.
After teams have removed all of the soot damage and smoke stains from the establishment, the next step in fire damage restoration is cleaning and repair of damage to the structure. This involves removing and disposing of all the debris created when a building endures a fire, and repairing or replacing key structural deficiencies caused by the fire. Fire can be extremely damaging to the structural integrity of a home, making this an exceptionally important step. No home or business owner would wish to go through the fire cleanup process only to have their establishment be condemned or collapse because of a previous fire.
When cleaning and repair of structural problems is complete teams enter the final step, restoration. Fire in a home and fire in a business are very damaging, and after the inferno stops home and business owners want to return to normalcy. Therefore, the final step of restoration includes replacing damaged cosmetic affects such as drywall, paint, carpeting, and etcetera which allows the home or business owner to have close to their original establishment back. When finished, the restoration from burned husk to home or business is complete, and the owner of the building can return to their life before the fire.

The Proper Steps for Handling Mold Damage
The Proper Steps for Handling Mold Damage
One of the first things people ask when they suspect mold in the home or commercial mold damage is how they handle the mold removal process. Do they attempt to handle mold removal on their own or do they call a professional restoration company for mitigation and remediation in addition to mold removal? Unlike some at-home situations where home and business owners get to decide on their own whether to do it themselves or call the pros, the art of mold removal must be handled by a restoration company.
Without proper removal techniques, remediation, and mitigation, mold in the home and commercial mold damage are more likely to return and to cause far more expensive damage. It’s never safe to try DIY mold removal, though there are a few things home and business owners can do to help. If the mold growth is due to a flood, it’s imperative homeowners and business owners begin removing water from the building immediately. They can turn off the air and heat to prevent the additional spread of mold spores, and they can learn to recognize the signs of mold growth in plain sight as well as mold growth behind the walls.
Recognizing Mold Growth
Mold growth can occur visibly in any home or office, but mold growth behind the walls is very likely to occur without anyone noticing. Some of the most common commercial mold damage as well as mold in the home is caused by mold growth behind walls, and it’s often unnoticed until it’s too late. Most people report smelling a smelly odor with a slight musty scent. They use deodorization such as lighting candles and spraying air freshener, but they quickly realize deodorization isn’t getting rid of the smelly odor.
This is likely due to the fact that the smelly odor is from mold growth behind the walls. Deodorization is fine if it’s just to mask the smelly odor to make things more pleasant at home or work, but it’s not a solution. Additionally, without professional restoration, remediation, and mitigation, the smelly odor might not disappear. It requires professional deodorization to handle this.
Mold is a fungus, so the presence of any fungus or even mildew in a home or office is a sign of potential mold damage. Many home and business owners ignore mold damage because they assume mildew and fungus growth in certain rooms are normal. Mildew and fungus both need high humidity and moisture to thrive, which is the same thing mold needs. Commercial mold damage and mold in the home are both sometimes accompanied by the discovery of dry rot.
Dry rot is caused by moisture, and dry rot is an indication mold damage is an issue. It’s not a guarantee, but any home or business owner who notices dry rot should call a restoration company.
Helping with Mold Removal
No one should do it themselves, but they should call a restoration company. The best thing home and business owners can do if they find mold or mildew or fungus at home is leave it alone. They can clean up any water damage as quickly as possible, but it’s imperative they do not touch mold. It makes it spread faster, which could create further mold damage.
One more thing home and business owners must know is black mold is not the only problematic mold. Black mold is discussed commonly, and most people think they know all about black mold and what it means. The truth is that most mold is black mold, and it all comes with a different level of seriousness. This is why it’s best left to the professionals.
Calling for professional help handling mold is the only solution for business and homeowners who find mold damage. It’s not something anyone can or should attempt alone. It’s a problem that only becomes more serious and more expensive the longer it’s ignored. Remediation and mitigation cannot wait.

Residential and Commercial Water Damage
Residential and Commercial Water Damage
Make no mistake, a water damage event, no matter how small it may be perceived to be, is a serious matter. Water damage that is allowed to sit can begin causing lasting damage to the property within 24 hours. After a week, a serious instance of water damage will very likely render the property uninhabitable, causing the total loss of the property's value.
Fortunately, there are proven and effective means of water damage restoration. We'll take a look at some of the ways in which a professional restoration company can ensure that a property will not sustain any lasting damage, no matter how severe the flood damage.
The United States is a land of lakes, rivers and some of the most extreme weather on the planet. For this reason, it has developed a robust flood damage mitigation industry, which ranks among the best in the world.
Water restoration has a proven, five-step process that has been developed over decades and that can raise the probability of total restoration of the property with flood damage to a near certainty.
The first step in mitigation of damage to a flooded home is to immediately call in a professional restoration company, as soon as there is a pipe break, supply line break or other flooding event. As in the case of attending to a trauma patient, the first couple hours are crucial. A flooded home that is immediately attended to has an almost 100 percent chance of successful mitigation of the damage. Delaying the mitigation efforts for more than about 24 hours begins to dramatically increase the likelihood of the home sustaining permanent damage.
No matter what, getting a professional restoration company on site and working on the problem as quickly as possible is the best move that a homeowner who has experienced a pipe break or a supply line break can do.
Once the team arrives to the flooded home, they will immediately begin the next step in the water cleanup process. This involves the assessment of the extent to which the water in the home or water in the business has permeated into the subflooring and structural elements of the property. The team will make use of technologically advanced instrumentation, in order to detect any hidden water or seepage points.
The next step in the water cleanup process is the full-scale removal of the water in the home or water in the business. The team will make use of heavy pumping systems and specialized vacuums that are capable of removing thousands of gallons per hour of water in the home or water in the business.
It is important that the owner of the flooded home never attempt to remove the water themselves. Only a team of professionals can fully remove the water in a home or water in a business on a time scale that will ensure no permanent damage is incurred.
The next phase of the water cleanup process is to begin drying the premises and its contents. The water cleanup team will make use of industrial-strength drying equipment, which is able to remove thousands of pounds of water from material and the atmosphere every hour.
At this point, the home's drying will be complete. The risk of damage to the structure will no longer be present. But the home and its contents must still be sanitized and cleansed. This is to remove any incipient mold formation. It will also get rid of all unpleasant smells.
A supply line break or a pipe break is a serious event. It can cause major damage to a property. But with the right team of professionals, a pipe break or supply line break doesn't need to break the bank.

Can Property Be Recovered after a Fire?
Can Property Be Recovered after a Fire?
Property owners are usually devastated after a fire in a home or a fire in a business due to the loss of property. Smoke damage and soot damage settle into fabrics and surfaces minutes after a fire and can seem irredeemable. Water damage from firefighting can quickly flood any fire in a home or a fire in a business and cause even more of a headache for a property owner. Commercial fire damage can bankrupt businesses quickly. The smoke smell that lingers after a fire can be extremely irritating. However, the good news is that a restoration company specializing in fire damage restoration can recover much of the value of a property that has undergone a disaster.
A fire in a home or a fire in a business should immediately be put out by firefighters, but the water used in firefighting can often flood the entire property. It is important to call a restoration company immediately so that industrial water extractors as well as dehumidifiers can be employed to dry out the property. This will allow for further fire damage restoration to continue. Fire damage can be limited by firefighting, but the water must be removed quickly to prevent water damage. Disinfectants and antimicrobials will also be used by the fire cleanup team in order to prevent further damage by the growth of mold or fungus.
Fire damage can compromise locks, doors, and windows, so these properties should be boarded up quickly. Individuals are able to board up their own doors and windows, but it is generally considered to be safer to allow a professional to board up and entry points to a fire damaged property. Fire cleanup teams are experienced in boarding up these openings and can do so quickly and efficiently.
Fire cleanup will proceed after the property has been dried and boarded up. Much of the value of the property will be recovered from removing any debris from the premises. Commercial fire damage will especially call for the removal of debris using heavy machinery. Fire damage can cause large amounts of debris to accumulate and require special disposal by a licensed technician. Smoke damage and soot damage may also cause items to be unsalvageable and require disposal. Fire cleanup teams are familiar with the special regulations that are necessary to remove this debris. Personal items that need to be removed and evaluated for restoration will also be removed at this step so that the premises can be worked on directly. The property owners and the restoration company can discuss how and whether or not to restore individual items.
An odor control technician will usually be used to reduce any smoke smell that remains in the property. Using an air purifier, he or she will be able to clear out smoke smells from smoke damage and soot damage. This odor control can recover much of the value lost, especially from commercial fire damage. Getting rid of the smoke smell is something every restoration company specializes in. Commercial fire damage can cause odors that take a while to remove, but with the right equipment and the right licensed professional, any smoke smell can be removed.
Fire damage restoration can also include replacing paint, drywall, or rebuilding entire parts of the property. Some restoration companies will offer this service or provide the contact information for the appropriate contractors. This will allow for the property owner to rebuild and regain the value of their property. That way, a fire in a home or a fire in a business does not need to render the entire property unusable.
Although most individuals are confused and shocked when they experience their first fire, a restoration company has seen it all. They will be able to offer services depending on the kind of fire damage, soot damage, or smoke damage that may be occurred. Fire damage restoration can transform a damaged property back to its pre-fire status. Visit http://www.SERVPROjamestownolean.com for more information on fire damage.
